The Persian/Daroga (Persian for ‘chief of police’) The Persian is rumored to have the ‘evil eye’. He is well known to all at the Opera House and his knowledge in the House’s secret passages is second only to Erik’s. His skin is the color of ebony and his eyes are the color of jade. He holds a strong sense of protectiveness toward Erik and is nearly as mysterious as the Opera Ghost. The Persian is described as having a ‘noble and generous heart’. “I have forgiven him the harm which he has done me.” –speaking of Erik Daroga, as Erik knows him, has known for awhile of the house on the lake and nearly drowned in an attempt to reach it. He was saved only when Erik recognized him. It is possible that Erik only ceased trying to kill the Persian because at some point in their shared past, before either arrived in Paris, Daroga saved Erik from a scheduled death. ’ Erik’s death was decided upon, together with that of all the laborers who had worked under his orders. The execution of this abominable decree devolved upon the daroga of Mazenderan. Erik had shown him some slight services and procured him many a hearty laugh. He saved Erik by providing him with the means of escape, but nearly paid with his head for his generous indulgence. ‘Fortunatly for the daroga, a corpse, half-eaten by the birds of prey, was found on the shore of the Caspian Sea, and was taken for Erik’s body, because the dargoa’s friends had dressed the remains in clothing that beloged to Erik. The daroga was let off with the loss of his imperial favor, the confiscation of his property, and an order of perpetual banishment. As a member of the Royal House, however, he continued to receive a monthly pension of a few hundred francs from the Persian treasury; and on this he came to live in Paris.’ |
