What we believe...
Although women of color are primarily identified as African-American, African-Caribbean, and/or African-descended people, for the purposes of the “From Womb to Womanhood” conference, women of color are different. So, let’s celebrate!
Because we are as diverse as the shades of our skin—from beige bamboo to tree-bark dark daughters—we represent multi-ethnic, multi-cultural ways of being and knowing what it is to be a woman. Because we are different, we understand that our gender commonality does not define how we behave, practice, or view some of the most recognized rituals associated with female maturation: dating and sexuality; educational pursuits and economic status options; raising children and the institution of marriage; self-identification as it relates to positive and negative labels, and self-expression as it relates to something as simple as how we wear our hair.

What we know...
In attendance at our “From Womb to Womanhood” conference, there will be working women who have not considered themselves experienced or educated enough to lead a workshop or participate on a panel. There will be our “seasoned” grand-women, who have lived lives worthy of emulating and appreciating. And there will be not-yet-adult women who, in spite of high school or higher education, have never had an opportunity to discover that within our well-traveled diversity, we share some very common experiences.
The mission of the conference, therefore, is to bring together the different voices of women and girls of color, to tell our stories, to share our gifts, to speak our truths, and to celebrate our sisterhood with one another.
