Covenant as a band was founded in 1993. The first CD however was not recorded until 1995. In the time between 1992 and 1995 the two founding members Both revering to themselves as Blackhearts spend writing music and lyrics for the upcoming album. In Times Before The Light is true to it’s name and thus filled with very dark Norwegian black metal. The album is comparable to Dimmu Borgirs Stormblast all dough it‘s a bit more symphonic and doommy. After releasing the album the two members spend another two years writing music for the album which would bring them metallic fame. When Nexus Polaris was released Covenant numbered 6 members. All of witch were already well known persons in the metal scene, making Covenant a sort of all-star band. There were no problems living up to the expectations, the album is in my opinion one of the best metal releases ever. It presents a spacey sort of black metal which is very dynamic and has a perfect production. Individually all songs are very good, but the albums true power rests in the total experience. This is one of those few albums I can’t help playing from start to finish every time I put it on. The band also won a Norwegian Grammy with this album. From 1997 to 1999 most new members left the band. Leaving only the two founding members and Hellhamer for the recording of Animatronic in 1999. With the release of this album the band also changes their name into the Kovenant because of a dispute with another band over the name. But the name is not all that changes……. To the disgust of most metal fans the band takes a firm step towards a gothic electro kind of music. Personally I don’t mind the musical adventuring of the band I like the experiment. Many bands change their music and a lot of them do this for money and fame. This is not the case with the Kovenant. But there are two little things I am just not happy about … The quality of the music on animatronic is simply not nearly as good as on Nexus Polaris. It’s a nice album, but nothing more. My second problem is the bands live performance. With songs from 3 very different albums to combine the band could give a really awesome concert. They have the music to start off a party. But instead the band only plays music from the last album and if you are lucky a song or two from Nexus Polaris. The way the band presents itself and their music is also really bad. There is just no energy flowing…..
