Sweden’s DAWN were formed Autumn/Winter Anno 1991. They recorded their first demo, Demo 1, in the Winter of 1992. That cold December spawned the first official DAWN demo entitled Apparition. At this point, DAWN had more of a straightforward Death Metal approach to their music, which is reflected in this first release. The Apparition Demo went on to sell over 200 copies and was re-released as a 7" EP, The Eternal Forest by the small label, BELLPHEGOT RECORDS. During the summer of 1993, DAWN entered UNISOUND Studios to record a promotional tape. The result, Promo ‘93, found its way to the NECROPOLIS RECORDS Hordes where the label signed DAWN immediately realizing the band’s potential as a powerful upcoming extreme metal act.

In May 1994, DAWN entered UNISOUND Studios to record their debut album, Nær Sólen Gar Niber for Evogher, translated as When the Sun Fades/Sets Forever. Produced by Dan Swano, the release showcased a hungry, young and talented bunch of musicians. The release went on to establish the band as one to watch in the Swedish scene. It was not until the 1996 release of Sorgh Pa Svarte Vingar Fløgh, a Mini-CD, that the band really started to catch media attention. The release, recorded at THE ABYSS Studios under the watchful eye of Peter Tägtgren, was hailed as one of the most powerful recordings from Sweden in a long time. TERRORIZER magazine hailed the band as the only REAL contenders to DISSECTION’s Throne. A host of great reviews helped transcend DAWN into a leading Swedish act. The Mini-CD also captured a great cover of INFERNAL MAJESTY’S “Night of the Living Dead” in DAWN’s chilling, blackened death metal style and was complimented on favorably by INFERNAL MAJESTY themselves!

…And so we arrive to 1997: DAWN’s first major line up change saw the departure of long time drummer Karsten, who was replaced by Jocke Petersson of NIDEN DIV. 187 and THY PRIMORDIAL. The change proved to be beneficial as DAWN entered ABYSS Studio’s once again to record their second amazing album. Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy) was recorded and mixed in two weeks. The result is simply devastating. Seven crushing songs of melodic and epic blackened death metal show why DAWN is easily one of the best bands to emerge from Europe in a long time. Produced by Peter Tägtgren and mastered at Stockholm’s famed CUTTING ROOM, Slaughtersun… is pure brilliance. The twin guitar assault of Frederic Soderberg and Andreas Fullmestad is unrelenting, coupled with melodic and ferocious prowess. Add the brutal bass lines of Lars Tangmark and the slaying vocal assault of Henke Forss and you’ve got a winner. Perhaps most surprising about this album is the breakneck speed and devastating drumming of Jocke Petersson which truly elevates the release beyond anything the band has ever done before.

Slaughtersun… will easily solidify DAWN’s position amongst only the most elite of Sweden. Its pure atmosphere, unique songwriting, malign melodies and epic production bring it to the forefront of a genre needing something ‘fresh.’ DAWN will also release a home video in 1998 for the single “The Knell and the World,” before rehearsals for their next studio outing.
