Recap
of meeting on May 8, 2006: On May 8th, We discussed the "I Object" creative writing idea, as discussed in Phil Goldberg's webcast presentation from www.nashvillesongwriters.com. An example of this form of writing is "Alcohol," recorded by Brad Paisley, where the song is written from the point of view of an inanimate object. To start the meeting, Donna recommended that members purchase the book Writing Better Lyrics by Pat Pattison. His first chapter discusses object writing. Donna read some portions of that chapter, and then, as an introduction to the concept, the group took nominations for an object, and took about 5 minutes to write memories, descriptions, and sense associations with the word "chimney," and then members shared those with the group. We then split into two small groups and the groups explored how they would approach writing a song from an object's point of view. One group chose the stage at the Moonlight Music Café as their objects, and one group chose the concept of writing from a door's point of view. We then did song critiques. Our next meeting will be June 5th, same time same place. Come join us! Please join us for our next meeting on June 5, 2006 at 6pm at the Moonlight Music Cafe, Birmingham's premier venue for songwriters. The Moonlight hosts an open mic at 8pm so any and all are encouraged to stay and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and support our local musicians. Stay tuned as we hope to update this page with our progress as a new and expanding group, and as we highlight our members and their accomplishments along the way. Please, come and bring all your songwriting friends. **The Birmingham Regional workshop is led by Donna Brooks. CLICK HERE for bio |
