Calypso

By: Lacy D.

As night fell, and the other cats settled in, a Siamese cat with light, tan fur hurried across the lawn. Her green/yellow eyes darted back and forth nervously as she kept watch for anyone that might be looking for her. She strained her ears to hear anything or anyone, then, when she was certain no one was coming, she began to run through the alley.

Calypso sat in the corner, behind a large dumpster. She hugged her knees, tucking them up by her chest. She shivered against the cold night. “Where are you, Aterrity?” she said quietly. All of a sudden, someone grabbed her shoulder. Calypso turned around and jumped up, preparing to run. “Hey…its just me, babe.” Calypso sighed with relief as she recognized the cool blue eyes that stared back at her. She admired Aterrity’s yellowish brown fur. “Well… its about time you showed up,” she said, a little too loud. Aterrity put a finger over her lips. “Shh…” he said. “I had a little trouble getting away from the other Jellicles. But I’m here now, so don’t worry.” Calypso was pulled against Aterrity’s tall body. Calypso pulled away quickly. “We can’t do this anymore, Aterrity,” she said sadly. “I fear for your life. Macavity has had people watch me really close lately, and I’m afraid that he knows something. It was hard enough trying to get away tonight, and I don’t know that I’m going to be able to do it again.” Calypso sat down on the concrete and burried her face in her hands. Aterrity sat down beside her, putting his strong arms about her while she cried. “Calypso,” he began. “I would die for you. You know that. I really want this to work. You could always come with me to the Jellicle tribe. It might take some time, but I think they would accept you. I love you, and I don’t want this to end.” Calypso looked into the cool blue eyes again. “I love you too,” she said.

Calypso and Aterrity stayed behind the dumpster holding each other all night untill they both fell asleep. When Calypso finally awoke, the sun was rising. A wave of panic rushed over Calypso as she ran to get back to her home before Macavity came looking for her.

Calypso ran into the deserted warehouse, and walked calmly down the hallways. When she came upon her and her mother’s shared room, she stopped. Calypso took the time to catch her breath and wipe some dust from her sleek coat. She pushed the curtain aside and walked in.

“Calypso!” Her mother, a light Siamese like her daughter, greeted her in shock. “Where have you been? You know how much trouble I could get into if you aren’t here in the mornings?” Mylitta rose from the cushion and approached her daughter. “You know not to leave at night! You….how…” The two cats stood staring at each other, and without warning Mylitta hit her daughter in the face. Calypso backed away from her mother, and stood against the door, holding her face. She had never been struck before in her life, other than the paw of Macavity. Her mother, eyes wide in shock at what she had done, collapsed on the floor. Calypso realized she was crying. She went over to her mother and sat by her. Calypso put her mother’s head in her lap and stroked her ears. “Shhh…” Calypso tried to sooth her mother’s soft cries. Mylitta whispered an apology over and over. “Its ok, mother,” Calypso said. “I deserved that.” Mylitta looked up at her daughter with sad eyes. “Not about that,” her mother said. “Not about that….Oh Calypso. How could you? How could you?” Calypso looked at her mother in confusion. “What is it?” she prompted. Her mother rose and looked out the window at the newly broken day. “How could you fall in love with a Jellicle?”
