UNTITLED
“Is this really what you want?”
“Yeah.” A nod then, “Yeah. Its for the best.”
Kerry’s eyes flutter shut then open again as she regards the other doctor.
“Susan.”
“Kerry. It’s really not a big deal, I mean…”
“Susan.”
“Please. Lets just…”
A sigh then, “Okay. But can I come by later?”
The blonde winces a bit before replying in hushed tones. “I don’t know, Kerry. Suzy is there, and she’s really inquisitive.”
Kerry’s lips curl into a smile at that. “I like children.” Now, she leans in closer. “I want to know her.”
Susan avoids Kerry’s gaze as she whispers. “One night of…” Now, she raises her eyes to meet the piercing blue stare of her superior. “Kerry, sex doesn’t equal…a family.”
Kerry deflates a little. “I didn’t consider it just ‘sex’.”
The blonde sighs. “I know, but…”
They part as Luka enters the lounge. He casts a glance in their direction before going to the pot and pouring himself a cup of the stale java. Their conversation ceases as Kerry busies herself at her locker. Susan stands there looking awkward, avoiding both sets of eyes.
“Your shift over?” the Croatian asks, and Susan is jolted to attention.
“Huh? My shift?” She smirks a little, a blush coloring her cheeks. “Yeah. Sorry…I’m…”
Kerry glances in her direction only briefly; their eyes meet.
“You feeling alright?” he approaches Susan and touches her forehead. “You look a little flushed.”
Nodding, Susan brushes his hand away, gently. “I’m fine Luka – maybe just a little tired.”
He nods, giving her space. “Okay. I guess I’ll get back to work.” He empties his cup and clears his throat. “If you need anything…”
Susan nods. “Thanks.”
As he exits, Kerry exhales, slowly. “You’re probably right. We should…just…”
“Kerry, the way you reacted…”
Kerry’s voice is a whisper. “How’d I react?”
Susan shakes her head, smirking. “You reacted like…like you were hiding something…he probably suspects…”
The redhead sighs. “Right. Well…”
“Kerry. I can’t keep lying to him…it’s sad how clueless he is…”
Weaver nods. “Okay. I’ll let you get back to your ‘thing’ with him, and I’ll just…”
Susan snorts. “Don’t act like that. You’re just like all the guys I’ve dated…and I don’t have a ‘thing’ with Luka – he just thinks…”
“That you two are dating.”
“We only went out twice.”
Kerry nods slowly. “And you were all over each other.”
“Oh – like how you are with Sandy?” Kerry raises her eyebrows in defense. “I’m not going to pretend he isn’t handsome, Kerry.”
The redhead sighs. “I have to get back to my shift.”
Susan rolls her eyes before meeting the other woman at the threshold. “Okay…come by after your shift and…we’ll…have ice-cream and talk.”
Kerry raises her eyebrows. “Okay, but I’m lactose intolerant…”
“Jesus Christ!”
“I’m kidding.” Kerry says, deadpanned before exiting the lounge.
Hours later, Susan sits at her dining room table finishing up a game of memory with the small towheaded niece she now considers her daughter. They are laughing and the doctor glances at her watch every so often.
“Aren’t you tired yet, Suz?” she asks the child who shakes her head slowly, covering her mouth.
“I want more ice-cream.” She murmurs innocently as Susan shakes her head, tugging lightly at one braided pigtail.
“No more for you, sweetie.” The doctor clears the table and regards her. “You’ve had almost as much as me.”
Suzy smirks. “Nah…I only had one bowl.”
“Apparently, that was one bowl too many – it’s nearly midnight.”
The child gets up and dances around the table, fanning out her dainty nightgown. “Mama always said it was okay – as long as it’s not a school night.”
Susan smiles in agreement as the doorbell rings.
Sighing, she goes to answer it, not surprised to see the small redhead standing on the porch.
“Hi.” Opening the door, she waves Kerry inside. “Come in, although I should warn you that…”
Just as she is about to tell Kerry about the energetic little girl’s presence, she comes dancing into the family room, and Kerry smiles and waves.
“Hi.” Suzy waves, shyly going to stand behind Dr. Lewis.
“This is Suzy, Kerry – Kerry…” Susan maneuvers the little girl in front of her and holds her shoulders. “…Suzy. I believe you guys have met once….maybe…”
Kerry nods and smiles again. “Yes, I believe we met years ago, though I doubt you remember me…”
Suzy shrugs and turns to face Susan. “Can I go play with my doll house?”
The blonde nods. “Sure – think that’ll tire you out?”
The child smirks, raising her eyebrows. “I doubt it.”
Now as she scurries away Kerry leans heavily on her crutch chuckling. “Kids.”
Susan rolls her eyes. “Yeah…kids.”
As Kerry regards her, she sighs. “Motherhood suits you.”
The blonde smiles. “Come into the kitchen. I promised you refreshments.”
In the kitchen, Kerry leans against the counter and Susan glances at her from the sink. “You can take your coat off, y’know.”
Kerry nods. “I know. I just thought…”
Dr. Lewis approaches Kerry and starts to unbutton the coat and slip it off her shoulders. Their eyes are locked, and Susan finds it hard to breathe in such a close proximity.
“You have gorgeous eyes.” She tells the redhead, staring into the twin blue orbs.
Kerry exhales, slowly. “Thank you.” Involuntarily, she reaches her hand up to push a stray lock of blonde hair away from her face. “You’re gorgeous all over.”
Lewis blushes, closing the distance between them. “You’re just being nice, Kerry.”
Kerry shakes her head slowly. “ I mean it, Susan.”
Their lips meet gently at first, then passionately, slowly drawing the other closer, deeper.
Susan’s sigh tells Weaver they should cool things off. Reluctantly, she pulls back.
Clearing her throat, she touches the cheek, lightly. “Suzy.” She says simply.
Susan nods, rolling her eyes. “I know.”
They both take a deep breath and reconvene on the living room couch where Susan brings Kerry a small dish of ice-cream.
“I hope you like chocolate.” Kerry nods but keeps her eyes on the other woman, content to just watch her.
“Sure…” she says absently. “…I like chocolate…”
Susan nods. “How was your shift?”
Kerry clears her throat. “Miserable.”
The other woman looks sympathetic. “Sorry.”
“Its okay.” Kerry shakes her head. “Just the usual problems, Romano, Pratt, Chen. I also got a phone call…”
Susan meets her eyes. “Sandy?”
Kerry nods. “I haven’t told her.”
The blonde sighs. “Kerry…I think you should. I mean, we…” she lowers her voice. “…had sex.”
Kerry clears her throat. “ I know. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but…”
Susan rolls her eyes. “Of course.”
“I don’t mean it like that.” Kerry quickly affirms. “ I just mean that I didn’t mean to have an affair. I didn’t set out to hurt anyone.”
Susan stands and goes towards the hallway. “Nobody ever does. I’m going to check on Suzy.”
Susan goes into the bathroom instead and stares into the mirror. How in Hell did she manage to end up sleeping with Kerry Weaver? The whole thing is a mystery to her. The way it happened, the way it started was like in a dream. Late at night, two women (who also happen to be colleagues) in a grocery store, lonely, desperate. Kerry had asked if Susan had wanted to get a drink. Susan had agreed, and went with her and somehow ended up at her townhouse. From there, she’d somehow ended up laughing and talking with her superior, a woman she normally found distant and annoyingly anal. Now, they talked, had more drinks, and Susan found herself kissing the redhead, enjoying herself, getting lost in her, and later she writhed beneath her, pinned naked to her bed as Weaver held her down, burying her face between her legs, pleasuring her. The thought sends a shiver throughout Susan and she splashes cold tap water on her face to cool her suddenly raging hormones.
Coming down the hall slowly, Kerry peers into the bathroom at Susan.
“Hey.” She says softly and Susan turns startled.
“Oh – hi. Did you need to get in here?”
Kerry shakes her head. “No. I…” she regards the blonde. “…did I do something wrong?”
Susan shakes her head, feeling the flush cover her face and shoulders. “No. I think I got a hot flash . I needed …something…”
Kerry nods. “If my being here makes you…uncomfortable.”
Susan shakes her head again. “No, Kerry. I like having you here.” Now, she sighs. “I guess that’s the problem…I want you here. I don’t want Luka here, and I get kind of ‘down’ when I imagine you at home…with her.”
Kerry nods. “I’ll tell her – tonight.”
Susan shakes her head. “Don’t tell her because of me. It was an affair – like you said. No big deal right?”
Kerry comes into the bathroom, shutting the door, closing them inside. Now, she comes up behind Susan and leans her head against her shoulder. “I told you – I didn’t mean it like that.”
Susan nods. “I know, Kerry.”
“Why don’t you believe me?” Kerry asks, putting her hands on the shoulders. “Yes, I care about Sandy, but I care about you also…”
The blonde is rolling her eyes. “I know . I know.”
Kerry buries her face in the soft warm neck. “Susan…”
Susan is getting weak again and her voice conveys that. “Kerry…just…lets forget it…”
Kerry kisses the tender flesh and Susan feels her eyes flutter close. “Susan…” she whispers.
“Kerry…we can’t…not now….” Susan’s voice is a whimper.
“I know.” The redhead murmurs against the neck and Susan turns to face her.
“But I want to…” Susan’s smile is playful as she presses her larger body against Kerry who places her hands at the slope of her hips. Their kiss is deep, passionate, Susan’s tongue searches for and finds Kerry’s as their gasp is lost deep within their souls.
Kerry’s hand comes out to hold Susan’s mandible gently. The kiss borders on erotic as Kerry presses her pelvis to the other woman’s using her free hand to pull her hips forward.
“Susan…” Kerry murmurs as Susan bends her head to kiss the slender neck and downward to her clavicle and as her hands fumble with the buttons of Kerry’s blouse, they both halt their actions when they hear the bathroom doorknob turning.
Susan reaches out to hold the door closed as the tips of Kerry’s ears become magenta.
“Aunt Susan?” The little girl voice sounds almost shrill, and inside the bathroom, the women have stopped breathing.
“Uhh…yeah.” Susan’s voice is a little unsteady. “You gotta go, sweetie?”
“Uh huh.” She says, and Kerry meets Susan’s gaze and they both start to laugh as quietly as they can.
Suzy stares at the door, eyebrows raised at hearing the muffled giggles.
“Aunt Susan?” she asks again, and Susan composes herself.
“Yeah – I’m coming out right now.” She opens the door and she and Kerry file out slowly, bowing their heads, ignoring the strange stare they get from Suzy.
Once the door is closed again, Susan and Kerry stand in the hallway, exchanging glances before giggling quietly.
“I’m sorry about that.” Susan says, and Kerry waves away her apology.
“Don’t be. We’re very mischievous you and me.”
Susan shakes her head, still smiling and completely taken with the redhead. “Is that what they’re calling it these days?”
Kerry shrugs and touches the sleeve of the other woman’s blouse causing azure eyes to meet baby blue ones.
“You’re making this more fun than it should be.”
Susan snorts her laughter as she considers her current predicament.
