Thanjavur, the legacy of the Chola Dynasty, was established during the beginning of the Christian era. The glory of the Cholas is reflected in the 74 and more temples in and around Thanjavur. The Granite monolith bull at Sri Brihadeeswara Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Thanjavur is famous for South Indian Silk and Tanjore paintings in its distinctive art style on glass. Handicraft, ornamental plates, icons, brass and copper bowls inlaid with silver, traditional musical instruments, bell metal castings, papier mache dolls, carpets and jewelry are also available in Thanjavur.

Thanjavur is connected to all the major places within the state, by road. The closest airport is at Thiruchirappaly which is 42 kms away.
