KIM COTE

A Musical Biography

Music has been the focus of Kim's life since his pre-school years. He remembers his Grandmother lifting him onto a stool, so he could reach the keys on the old upright piano.

At the age of seven, Kim was sent to boarding school at Jericho Hills School for the Blind in Vancouver, BC. At ten, he was given the opportunity to join the school band where he was given his first trumpet. Kim continued with the band until he left Jericho at the age of fifteen.

He returned to his birthplace, Calgary, where he was the first blind student in Alberta to be integrated into a "regular" high school in grade ten. Kim could not be without music for long and soon teamed up with four of his friends to form a group called "Brass Incorporated". They played local weekend gigs, weddings, etc. for the three years until graduation.

Following high school, Kim played organ for an eight piece group, "The Soul Men", whose specialty was R & B.

For the next year and a half, Kim gained valuable experience by free-lancing with various bands, playing drums, organ or guitar.

Kim jumped at the opportunity to become a keyboard player and one of the lead vocals for a five piece group called "Lickin' Stick".

The day following the last gig with "Lickin' Stick", Kim was on a plane to Ocean Shores, Washington, where he joined "Dick Caldwell & The Celebrities".

This was a show band with six musicians and two dancers. Singing, playing keyboards and bass with this group, Kim toured across the United States, from Bridgeport, Connecticut to San Diego, California and in Canada, from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Several years as a single act followed. Kim then teamed with Ben Aaron to form "Tunesmith". This duo toured Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories for five years with Ben playing guitar, piano and accordian and Kim playing organ, keyboards, guitar and bass pedals.

When Ben decided to settle down Kim joined forces with Carl Deem in the duo "Cody" and continured to tour for another five years.

Over the years, Kim has learned over 3000 songs. He has wow'd audiences time and time again with his amazing repertoire. The "request line" is always open when Kim performs. He has added trombone to his act and spends hours creating the perfect arrangements and authentic sequences.

Kim has recorded several albums with his engineering partner Andrew Hagen. Kim has written several original tunes over the years, many of which appear on his latest album "Between Friends".

Kim has always had a strong yen to be a solo act, although he still performs occasionally with partner Lann Lieurance, in the duo known as "Perfect Pitch". This duo is a versatile dance band and performs all over Alberta.

Since 1991, accompanied by his wife, Linda, who acts as his chauffeur and "roadie",Kim has toured Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Summers are spent playing in the Yukon, where he has developed a loyal following.
