Thirumohur

T hirumohur, 10 km to the north-east of Madurai, has its legendary origin in the distant past when devas and asuras churned the ocean to ger amirtham (nectar), a sip of which would ensire immortality. When the pot of nectar surfaced, vishnu, in the form of mohini (the charmer), took it away, and while the asuras stood mesmerised by her beauty, distributed the nectar among the devas. The puranic name of thirumohur – Mohanashetram – Confirms the incident.

Ptolemy, the Aleaandran astronomer, writes about a place called Magour, a name Thirumohur was one once known by, causing speculation that it may have once been an important city. The shrine here is dedicated to mohanavalli thayar and kalamegha perumal. Its architectural style places it in the 16th century.
