The principal cast members for the Walnuts' musical season opener, Rags, has been announced by Producing Artistic Director Bernard Havard. Rehearsals begin August 15; the musical is in previews September 5-12, opens September 13 and runs through October 22.
Rags features a trio of Tony Award-winning creators: book by Joseph Stein, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
Rags tells the inspirational story of Rebecca, an immigrant arriving at Ellis Island with her young son, David, and their struggle to make a life for themselves in the New World. Rebecca goes to work while searching for her husband Nathan, who preceded them to America. When they are finally reunited, she finds Nathan greatly changed. Their story of amazing courage and spirit makes for a magical, moving theatrical experience.
Betsi Morrison has been cast as Rebecca, with Mark Richard Keith as David. Morrison appeared at the Walnut in Cabaret; Keith will share the role of David with Chris Mirarchi, as both youths make their Walnut debut.
Michael Gruber has been cast as Saul, the union organizer who changes Rebecca's life. Mary Kate McGrath will play Bella, who befriends Rebecca; Jeffrey Coon will portray Ben, Bella's sweetheart; and Connie Nelson has been cast as Rachel, another of Rebecca's friends.
Rags will be under the direction of Bruce Lumpkin, whose Walnut credits include La Cage Aux Folles, Grand Hotel, Cabaret and he Goodbye Girl. Lumpkin will collaborate with Music Director Sherman Frank and Choreographer Barbara Siman. The design team includes Set Designer John Farrell, Costume Designer Gail Cooper-Hecht, Lighting Designer Jeffrey S. Koger and Sound Designer Scott Smith.
