Actually they filmed a TV commercial around 1982 with the actors in silhoutte performing dance moves, ending with them in the "cats pose." KUALA LUMPUR: A tale of the Jellicle Cats, retold time and again for the last 21 years in the West End and on Broadway, has finally made its way to Kuala Lumpur.
The entire cast consisting of 33 members with their choreographer Jo-Anne Robinson and musical supervisor Fiz Shapur touched down at the KL International Airport (KLIA) yesterday from South Africa for the opening on Sept 27 at Istana Budaya.
Looking ordinary without their cat costumes, the members also looked a little weary at first. But like any cat would be, they immediately sprang into action once provoked.
First to shoot off was Gareth Dry. Dry, like the character of George, was full of feline tales. He said that when the curtains fell for the last time on the production in the West End in May 2002, many thought it would be a tough act to follow.
"A lot of people thought we couldn’t do it, but you know what, most who have been to Cats in the West End and then seen us will tell you our show is much better," he said.
Choreographer and also director Robinson agreed, saying she received feedback from the audience that they enjoyed the South African production more.
She said for the Malaysian crowd who might or might not have seen Cats before, they would be surprised by the enormous energy and enthusiasm coming from this much fresher and younger cast, made up of South Africans and two Australians.
The musical score by Andrew Lloyd Webber tells a story of many different cats and their characters, based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
