Demeter is a very tense and serious cat, most people think is due to a traumatic experience with Macavity, which she sings about with Bombalurina. It is commonly thought that she was kidnapped as a kitten and taken to Macavity’s hideout, where he abused and raped her. She spends most of her time around Bombalurina who seems to look after her, particularly during Macavity scares.
Demeter, Bomb and Jellylorum sing the female chorus parts in “The Old Gumbie Cat.” Demeter also sings about Grizabella, she seems to understand all that Griz has been through and reaches out to her, though often other cats cut her off. It isn’t until she is almost recaptured by Macavity and Munkustrap and Alonzo save her life that she seems to settle down. After this she is often seen with Alonzo, (Munkustrap in London and the video), finally allowing herself to get close to a Tom again.
It is commonly thought that Demeter and Bomb are either best friends or sisters, given the difference in looks I think they’re probably just good friends. Demeter is the roman goddess of years’ crop.
