Brian Blessed’s many theatre roles include the title role in Oedipus the King and Oedipus at Colonus at the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester, State of Revolution at the National Theatre, The Devil’s Disciple, The Eagle Has Two Heads and Banquo in Macbeth. He is well known to television audiences and his appearances include The Three Musketeers, Son of Man, Brahms, Cold Comfort Farm, The Recruiting Officer, Churchill’s People, George Sand and I, Claudius as Emperor Augustus which was one of his favourite parts. While making Boy Dominic for Yorkshire TV he met his wife the actress Hildegard Neil. In 1981 he has been seen in the series The Little World of Don Camillo. His films include Country Dance, The Trojan Women with Katherine Hepburn, A Last Valley, Man of La Mancha, Henry VIII, Barry Lyndon, Bach in The Joy of Bach and most recently Vultan in Flash Gordon, a film which he greatly enjoyed making. He is a keen mountaineer and has climbed Mt Blanc, the Matterhorn and Kilimanjaro. He also works for the protection of animals with the World Wildlife Fund.
