The following are pictures and descriptions of the canes
in my collection. The first group consists of canes I've purchased.
In the second group, are the canes I've put together myself. The handles are mostly objects from thrift stores (unless otherwise noted). The various ferrules, collars, and other metal parts have been fabricated from brass pipe or candlestick parts or from sheet brass or silver. Besides the fact that I need a cane to steady myself while walking, I have a lot of fun shopping for and/or making canes. The thrift store canes have cost between three and ten dollars and the handle materials one to ten dollars (except for the powder horn from nepal which cost $60). The most interesting and challenging part of cane making is finding a way to make a sturdy connection between handle and shaft. Fortunately my friend, Allen Chitwood, allows me to use his excellent machine shop facilities to perform the critical task of boring the the shafts. |
