A kris is an Indonesian knife with a wavy damascus steel blade. Since the blades are highly valued, they're passed down through the generations. Handle styles, however, change resulting in a surplus of handles. Thus, I managed to buy a couple of kris handles from a man at last year's gem show. The one showing views of both sides was carved from water buffalo horn; the other was carved from some exotic hardwood. Since the handles are not at right angles to the blades, it took some ingenuity to make them come out at right angles to the cane shafts. For the horn handle, I used a brass pipe nipple (filled with pewter so it wouldn't collapse during the bending) and the cup of a brass candlestick to reinforce the shaft. The wood handle required the use of a much filed and smoothed brass pipe elbow. |
