Carl Leon Phillips =

|
1884—1957 |
Carl Leon Phillips was born in New Sharon, Mahaska
County, Iowa in 1884. The youngest of five children an=
d son
of John Calvin Phillips and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Richardson Phillips, Leon
lived in New Sharon for only a few short years. He was destined to be taken from=
his
father, when he was only six years old.&=
nbsp;
In 1890, Leon’s mother, Lizzie, p=
ut
four of her five children in a wagon and headed for Oklahoma. She left behind not only John Ca=
lvin,
her husband of 18 years, but she was forced to leave her oldest son, John
Sanford in Mahaska County, Iowa with his father. . |
According to historical accounts passed
down from John Sanford to his children, John Calvin would not allow his
firstborn son go to Oklahoma with Lizzie, and his sisters, Cora, Alberta and R=
ose
and brother Carl Leon. John
Sanford Phillips sat on the porch and watched sadly as his mother, three
sisters and one brother drove away in a horse drawn wagon. I’m sure he felt isolated =
and
lonely and thought he would never see any of them, again. |
No one has an explanation for why Carl Leon’s mother, Lizzie, l=
eft
her husband and first born child to go to Oklahoma. One can only speculate as to the
reason. A 32 year old woman
decides to pick up four of =
her
five children, leave the security of a husband and home and venture out w=
est,
on her own. The picture of
independence Lizzie represented much have had a huge effect on her
children. Did they respect =
her
for the strength and courage it must have taken for her to make such a
drastic change or did they resent her for taking them away from their fat=
her
and brother. |
