Part 6 Jarrod went into the study; he retrieved his gunbelt and his jacket off of his desk and returned to the entryway. "Nick, I'm going after Heath and the sheriff we'll find her." He could see the pain in his brother's face and placed his hand on his shoulder. "Jarrod, Heath is at least two days out. By the time you find him, the trail will be gone!" Nick clenched his fists. It didn't matter what Jarrod said; he was going to find her. "Nick, there isn't any sign of rain on the way. If they left a trail we'll find it. It's got to be the same men that tried to kill you. I think Heath was right, he did shoot one of them! Now they're out for revenge." "Revenge," Nick shouted, "they tried to kill me!" "I know, but if Heath did kill their brother, they may have taken her for some kind of revenge against you and Heath." Jarrod felt a rage of his own, building inside himself; Nick wasn't the only one capable of anger. "Nick, I know what you're thinking and you're not well enough yet to go after them." Victoria looked at her son; she could see it all in his face, the anger and the determination. "Nick, no!" She pleaded; she had already almost lost him she wasn't going to let him go out there when he wasn't well yet. "Where's my Momma?" The three Barkleys spun around to see little Victoria at the top of the stairs, peering through the stair railings. Her eyes were filled with tears and she clutched her nightgown with her tiny fists. Nick mounted the stairs, holding onto the railing and picked her up into his arms. "Where's Momma!" she cried. "Sweetheart, it's all right, she'll be home soon." Nick's eyes were moist; it was heartbreaking to see her so upset and afraid. "When is she coming home?" She looked directly into his eyes and Nick thought at that moment he was looking at a tiny version of Cat, such intense eyes. "Soon, Victoria, real soon. See, Jarrod's on his way to go get her now." He pointed down at his brother, a look of anguish on his face. Nick's mother had climbed the stairs and took Victoria from his arms. She hugged the little girl tightly and led her back to her room, promising to tell her a wonderful story. Nick's arms stayed out as if he were still cradling her in his arms. He leaned against the rail for support. He was seething with anger, if they do anything to harm her! Cat, where are you, his heart cried! Jarrod left the house immediately, thankful for the full moon. He was going to find Heath and fast, they would find Catherine and bring her home. Nick sat in his room until all the lights had been put out around the house. He walked out his bedroom door, as quietly as possible and walked down the hallway. He opened the guest bedroom door and went inside. Little Victoria was still awake and sat up in bed when he came inside. Nick came over to her bed and sat beside her. "Where is Momma, Uncle Nick?" She looked so tiny and frightened in that big bed. "I don't know, honey, but I'm going to go get her and bring her back home safe and sound." "You promise?" "Cross my heart." Nick crossed his heart and kissed Victoria on the forehead. "Come on now, you go to sleep. And we'll be back in no time at all." He pulled the covers up around her and Victoria wrapped her little arms around his neck, giving him a big hug. He kissed her again, on her cheek and left the room. Nick headed downstairs; the moonlight was shining brightly through the windows. He went into the study and pulled a rifle from the gun rack. Going out into the entryway, he checked both his own guns again and fastened his gunbelt on, hanging it lower than usual to avoid rubbing his wound. "Nick", his mother rose from a chair in the living room. "You shouldn't be doing this. You're not well yet." Victoria walked over to him and stood in front of him. "Mother, I have to, don't you see? It could be two days before Jarrod and Heath get back to try and find their trail and it could be gone by then!" Nick pleaded with his mother. "Did you see the look on that little girl's face, how can I just sit here while her mother is out there, in trouble!" "I know, Nick" Nick was ready for a full-fledged argument with her; he was surprised by her response. "I know, you do have to go find her Nick. But that doesn't mean that I have to like the idea. Please, promise me you'll be careful!" Victoria was truly frightened; her son was not quite back to his full self yet and her god only knows what her friend was going through. "I promise, Mother, I will be!" He kissed his mother on the cheek and she leaned against him. He finally turned away and left the house. Nick headed out, in the full moon, to find Cat. He followed the path she would have taken home that morning. He didn't let Coco go any faster than a walk, fearing if they moved too fast he could miss something. He reached Catherine's house without finding anything and silently, he prayed for help. He started the trail again, feeling more than slightly disheartened. He began to ride back toward his home when he thought he saw something glimmer in the grass. He dismounted and walked over to where he thought he had seen something. Nothing, he wasn't sure why he had even bothered to stop. But, he bent down, took off his gloves and ran his hands in the grass, not knowing what he was looking for. He ran his hand into something cool and metallic. Nick grabbed it and held it up to the moonlight. A locket, it was Catherine's! He opened it up to see a tiny photograph of Victoria inside. He rubbed his thumb over the top of the locket and brought it close to his heart. Nick looked up and saw a path of flattened grass, like something or someone had been dragged through it. He followed the path until he saw plainly, two wheel marks leading to another horse path. Yes, he thought, now I'll find you. He raised his eyes to the sky and whispered a quiet, "thank you." "Ohhh," Catherine's head throbbed as she tried to sit herself up. She waited for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Not much to see, she was in a dark room with no furnishings or markings of any kind. Just cold and damp. She tried to rub the sore spot on the back of her head, but found that her hands and feet were tightly bound with rope. "What the heck.." she thought. The events of that morning came back to her in a whirlwind. As she was riding to her house, two men had approached and asked about work in the area. Then, one of the men said her name and Catherine had suddenly felt in danger, she had not told them who she was. She had tried to back away, but one of the men grabbed the reins to her horse and the other had grabbed her and pulled her off her horse, but not before she had delivered a very painful kick to him. She silently hoped he had not made a quick recovery. She had screamed and fought with them, her blouse was torn and the locket she wore every day had broken from around her neck and fallen to the ground. "She's a little wildcat, this one, and pretty to boot!" She vaguely remembered one of them saying that. She shuddered as she recalled how he had looked at her when her blouse was torn. My necklace! She realized that it was no longer around her neck. She sighed deeply, it was a piece that held a great deal of value to her. Catherine thought for a moment about her current situation and decided to try and call out for help. A man burst through the door and laughed at her, "go ahead and scream, lady, ain't nobody gonna hear you out here!" "Who are you and why are you keeping me?" She demanded. "Well, little lady, I'm the man that stabbed your boyfriend last week. And as to why we're keeping you here. Let's just say you'll find out soon enough." He had moved across the room and was standing over her. "You'll regret this! They'll come looking for me and when they do you will regret this." She hissed at him. "Come looking for you? Lady, that's exactly what I'm hoping for!" "What?" Catherine didn't understand. What were his motives? "Lady, one of them Barkleys killed my brother, shot him and now, I'm going to kill them" "What are you talking about, Heath only shot your brother after he stabbed Nick. It was in self-defense!" "Look, he killed my brother and they are going to pay they are all going to pay!" "Well, after what you did to Nick, I'm glad Heath shot one of you!" Catherine was defiant; she wasn't about to let them see her fear. The man grabbed the ropes around her hands and pulled her to her feet, Catherine struggled as he brought her very close to him. He glared at her and forced his mouth onto hers. Catherine fought wildly and bit into his lip as he tried to push her mouth open. He pulled back from her and with pure rage, backhanded her across the face sending her to the floor in pain. "You watch what you say about my brother, lady!" He pulled a knife and bent down to her holding it in front of her face, "you watch what you say or I'm gonna do you worse than that man of yours." He stormed out of the room; leaving Catherine shaking on the floor. Get a hold of yourself, she thought, you've got to find a way out of here! The first light of morning was filtering in through the clapboards and she strained to get a better look at the room and herself. She was a mess, her ivory blouse was completely ripped in the front and her camisole underneath was not enough of a cover for her peace of mind. Her black gauchos looked gray they were so covered in dirt and dust. She noticed to that her boots were nowhere to be seen and the ropes were tied around her bare legs. Cat tried to wriggle her feet and hands free from the ropes, but it did no good. In fact, it made matters worse, the ropes began to cut into her legs and she could spy a small amount of blood around her ankles. Catherine had an idea. Nick stopped and dismounted off Coco, the horse was weary and needed watering badly. A full day had passed and still no sign of her. The only good news was that he seemed to be getting closer. The trail they had left seemed fresh they couldn't be too far off. He remembered there being a stream up over the hill and he led Coco to it. It was a beautiful secluded spot with trees and grass and a small stream running down the hill. He let Coco drink and eyed his surroundings. The water tumbled down in a small waterfall and pooled where he had stopped. He made a mental note to bring Cat to this place sometime; she loved the outdoors as much as he did. It was getting dark and tonight, Nick wouldn't be blessed with another full moon. There were far too many clouds in the sky to travel by night. He grudgingly decided to bed down for the night until first light. He made a small fire and sat down next to it, there was a chill in the air and he pulled his jacket around him. His hand went into his pocket and he pulled out her locket. He held it gently in his gloved hand, toying with the delicate chain that held it. He clenched it inside his fist, pulled his hat down low over his eyes and tried to get some rest. Nick didn't sleep very much, his night filled with worries and anger over what had happened. At first light, he mounted Coco and headed back to the trail. Catherine cried out, "help, please!". The other man came through the door, "whadda ya want!" "Please, my feet, I can't feel them anymore! The ropes are too tight, see, they are bleeding!" She did her best to look as pained as possible. The man bent down and looked at her legs, he put his hand on her leg just above the ropes, and caressed her leg up to her knee. Catherine shirked away from him. He looked down at her ankles, they were indeed bleeding. "Please, leave my hands tied, if you want. But, please free up my legs, please!" Catherine pleaded with the man. "Oh alright, you can't get very far around here anyways! He pulled out a knife and bent over her, "don't you even think about trying anything, Missy!" He waved the knife in front of her face then turned it on the ropes, cutting her legs free. She made her move, as the man was still bent over, she raised her legs and thrust them into his chest, sending him to the floor with the wind knocked out of him. She got up and ran out of the room, not seeing the other man, she was out the door of the shack her hands still bound behind her. She didn't stop to think which direction she should head, she just ran. She spotted the other man coming up on horseback and the one she had kicked shouted at him to catch her. The underbrush was thick and impeded her running greatly. She could feel her feet and legs being cut as she ran and she could hear the man on horseback, getting closer. The man got down off his horse and took after her on foot. It wasn't hard for him to catch up to her and he grabbed he from behind, throwing her down to the ground. She looked up to see him leaning over her with a gun pointed at her head. She screamed. The man moved over her and straddled her; the look in his eyes terrified her. Her arms were pinned underneath her and she tried in vain to kick him. The man laughed at her as she struggled and his hands went down to her torn blouse, they ripped off the few buttons that remained. She heard a voice from the distance, yelling, "Catherine?" She knew his voice instantly and cried out to him as the man dragged her to her feet. "Nick!" The man grabbed her mouth and held her tightly, dragging her back to the shack. Her legs were covered with cuts and blood and they throbbed with pain. "Come on, get ready, they're here!" he shouted to the other man. They were unaware that Nick was alone. One of the men grabbed Catherine from behind and put a knife up to her throat. She could feel his hot breath against her face and his heart pounding in his chest. Despite her efforts to remain calm, she began to tremble. Nick dismounted from his horse and quietly made his way to the shack. He came around the side of the shack and saw two horses tied up. He drew both guns, thought for a moment and decided what would be the best course of action. Moving up the side of the shack, he stayed underneath the few windows it had until he reached the door. He stood up, took a step back and kicked the door in; splintering it across the room. He stopped in his tracks when he saw Catherine. The man had backed himself into the corner and held her in front of him, with a knife at her throat. He saw her trembling, a bruise on her face, and her torn blouse. He seethed with rage. "Drop that knife! It's over now, let her go!" Nick, angrily, pushed the table in front of him, to the side. He then saw Catherine's bare legs, they were too many cuts on them to count and her ankles and feet were severely swollen. His heart ached for her. "That'll be far enough, Barkley! Come any closer and she'll die!" The man yelled. Nick looked at Catherine and saw her eyes darting to the other side of the room. He looked over and saw the other man rise from behind a cupboard; his gun aimed directly at him. "Drop your guns, Barkley." Nick paused for a moment, the man holding Catherine grabbed her neck even tighter and she gasped for air. "No! Okay, see I'm putting my guns down on the floor. Take it easy!" He bent down and slowly, put his guns on the floor in front of him. "Kick them over here!" Nick looked at both of them and kicked his guns over to the man holding her. The man released his hold on Catherine and reached down to grab the guns. Cat looked at Nick and using all of her strength, shoved the man with her body and knocked him to the floor. "Nick!" she yelled and kicked one of his guns back in his direction. The man got up and came at Catherine with his knife. Nick lunged for his gun; he grabbed it and fired at him, sending a bullet into his chest. The other man jumped Nick while he was getting up from the floor. He struggled with him, wrestling on the ground and fighting for the gun. The gun went off and Catherine watched, horrified, as the two of them seemed to be frozen for an instant. The man slumped down, dead. The pain in Catherine's legs was intense and she could no longer stand, her legs gave way and she fell to the floor. Nick immediately went to her and gathered her up in his arms. He carried Catherine out of the shack and then he set her down on the ground, laying his guns beside her. He gingerly cut away the ropes around her hands. "Cat, are you all right?" He was holding her face in his hands. "I.. I think so Nick, but I don't know if I can walk very much." She looked down at her legs, cut and bleeding and swollen from the ropes. "Its all right honey, you weigh less than a bird! I think I could carry you all the way." He smiled and wrapped his arms around her and hugged her, burying his face into her hair. His eyes were moist and he said a silent thank you to the heavens... Catherine buried her head in Nick's shoulder and then looked up at the shack. As she did, she saw the man stumbling towards them and raising his gun pointed directly at Nick. Catherine, with one move, pushed Nick away from her. She grabbed his gun, aimed and fired. Nick looked in surprise first at her and then the man lying on the ground, dead. Catherine trembled and dropped the gun to the ground. It had been the first time she had ever aimed a gun at a person, instead of a target, and now, she had taken his life. She burst into tears. He pulled her to him, cradling her in his arms and letting her cry. "I love you, Cat. It's all going to be okay now, we're going home." He whispered in her ear. He stroked the hair off of her face and stood up, he took his jacket off and put it around her shoulders. The sun was setting in the sky as Nick helped Catherine up onto Coco. He mounted his horse in front of her and Catherine wrapped her arms around his waist, hugging him tightly. "Nick, how's Victoria" "That girl, she's very strong, like her mother" he said as he put his hand on hers. "She knew something was wrong, but, I promised her that you would be fine and she seemed to calm down." "I need to get home to her." Her daughter may have been too young to remember what had happened to her father, but she wasn't about to let her daughter think, for even a moment, that she wasn't coming back home. "We will, but we're a full days ride off, we'll need to camp for the night there's not much moonlight to light the way." Catherine thought for a moment, "Camp? Overnight?" "Yes, Cat, and we need to clean your legs up, if we don't they could get infected." He was all business and wasn't going to listen to any other ideas. "All right, Nick, besides, your dressing should probably be cleaned up too." His hand went to where he had been stabbed; he hadn't allowed himself to think about the discomfort he felt until Catherine had mentioned it. "I know the perfect place to camp!" He urged Coco on, back to the stream where he had camped before. When they arrived at their destination, it was almost completely dark. Nick helped Catherine down off Coco and carried her over to the water's edge. She watched him, lovingly, as he built a small fire and put on some coffee. Catherine gratefully accepted the hot liquid, feeling chilled by the night air. "I have something of yours." Catherine watched as Nick pulled the small gold locket from his jacket pocket. He held it up to her and put it into her hand. He smiled at her and gently brushed a tear from her cheek. "Now," Nick said softly touching her ankle, "we need to clean those cuts up." He picked her up into his arms again and carried her next to the pool of water sitting her down so that her legs were dangling in the cool water. He took a cloth from his saddlebag and dipped it in the water, running the cloth over her legs to clean off the dirt and dust. As he was doing that, she looked at him, her eyes went down to his waist and she saw on a small bloodstain on his shirt. "Nick, your wound!" "Oh, its all right." He looked down and saw the small stain and brushed her worries off. "Nick, you shouldn't have been riding. You're not fully recovered yet" she chastised. "Oh, I see, now that you're rescued and doing fine NOW, I get a lecture." He stopped washing her legs and folded his arms around his chest. "Yes, that's right, I am going to lecture you!" She smirked, "Now take off that shirt and let me see." "Come on now!" "Nick Barkley, I've seen you without a shirt on before, now take it off and let me see the wound!" She was not about to take no for an answer; she had to make sure there were no signs of infection. He sighed, unbuttoned his shirt and knelt down beside her. She carefully moved the bandages around his waist to look at it. She was relieved to see that it had not become infected. "You should wash that off just to be sure it doesn't get infected, Nick." She put her hand out and Nick handed her the cloth, she dipped it into the water and gently cleansed his wound. "Actually, I think I can do a much better job of cleaning it up than that!" Nick moved away from her and took off his boots. "Nick Barkley, what on earth are you doing?" She laughed as she watched him wade into the water. "Nick, you're going to catch your death, come out of there!" He looked at her, almost up to his waist in the pool and said, "you said it needed cleaning didn't you?!" He gave an exaggerated sigh. "Well, I did say that, but Nick, it's too cold!" She couldn't help but smile at him. "Nah, it's not that cold." He brushed his hands across the top of the water and managed to splash Catherine just a little. "See, not that cold at all!" Now it was his turn to laugh. "You are completely incorrigible! Hey, you're not even getting that wound clean, you're not deep enough yet!" She laughed and pointed at his side, completely dry. She was grateful for his crazy antics; the stress and fear were melting from her. Nick looked down at his side, "you're absolutely right!" with that he dove under the water and came up shaking. His body covered in goose bumps. "Well, maybe just a little cold." She was laughing, uncontrollably, "what am I going to do with you!' She sighed as she watched him get out of the water and sit down next to her. She picked up the blanket next to her and wrapped it around him. She looked at him and laughed, his hair was in every direction and she brushed it back with her fingers. Nick took her hand and brought it to his lips, kissing the inside of her palm. She felt her body warm, as he kissed each finger. He opened his arms and wrapped the blanket around the both of them, pulling her close. Her eyes went up to his. He didn't kiss her lips at first but instead, found her neck and left a trail of feather light kisses from the base of her neck to her jaw line. Catherine's head tilted back, her eyes closed and she parted her lips, hungry for his kiss. Nick sat up on his knees and brought her up to him. They looked at one another, filled with passion that had been put off for too long. Nick slowly moved to kiss her and as his lips brushed hers, he was overwhelmed with his desire for her. They kissed hungrily, Cat's arms wrapped around his bare back and she ran her hand up his spine causing him to shudder from the sensation. He pulled away from her suddenly, "Cat, I love you and I want to have all of you. Just tell me to stop and I will, I will." He had his hands on her waist and his eyes gazed into hers. She could see the same love, the same desire in his eyes that filled her heart. " I love you very much. And I want you too, with all my heart." She added breathlessly, "Nick, don't stop, love me." He wrapped his arms around her again and kissed her, as they kissed, Nick laid Catherine down in the grass. His lips traveled down her neck again to her collarbone and he kissed her along the edge of her torn blouse until he had reached the top of her camisole. Catherine moaned softly as he ran his hands up from her waist to the ribbon that tied her camisole together. "Nick, Catherine, where are you?" Jarrod yelled. They had seen Coco tied up to a tree. Jarrod, Heath and the sheriff dismounted. Nick, very briefly, put his head on Catherine's chest and sighed, shaking his head. Catherine suppressed a small laugh as he pulled her up so that they were both sitting. Jarrod got to them first. "My God, what happened to you two?" His voice filled with worry, he looked down and saw Catherine's cut and swollen legs, "Nick, did you clean those up? They could get infected." "Uh, yes, I just finished cleaning them up." "I'll be fine Jarrod, really, they'll heal." She added reassuringly. "Just the same, I think we should take you to the doctor, first thing. Nick, for goodness sake, give her your jacket, can't you see her blouse is torn!" Jarrod looked at his brother, exasperated. He dutifully wrapped his jacket around Cat's shoulders. Heath just stood there with an amused look on his face. He bent down to Nick "Amazing how wet you got just cleaning her legs, Nick!" he whispered to his brother and was quickly elbowed in the side. They all camped there for the night, Nick and Catherine across the campfire from each other. He watched her, longingly, as she curled up in her blanket to sleep. The three brothers awoke suddenly to Catherine's screams. They calmed as it became apparent she had screamed from a nightmare. "She must have been through hell." Jarrod said to Nick, "she needs you." Nick just nodded to his brother and went to her side, wrapping his blanket around her. She laid her head on his strong shoulder, "I'm, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." "It's okay, don't worry about it." He kissed her forehead, "you're safe now, no one is ever going to hurt you again." He brushed her hair, as she laid it back onto his shoulder and they both fell into a peaceful sleep. They arrived back at the Barkley ranch, by nightfall the next day. Nick helped Cat down off of Coco and carried her into the house. They were greeted by the two Victoria's and were showered with hugs and kisses. They gathered in the drawing room. Nick sat next to Cat; Jarrod standing by the side of his mother's chair, Audra and Heath sat next to each other. Little Victoria climbed into Nick's lap and he wrapped his arms around her. Nick regaled them with the story of what had happened and they were all captured by the story. The elder Victoria, noticing that Catherine remained very quiet during the telling. Later in the evening, after every one had retired for the night. Victoria knocked on Catherine's door. Catherine opened the door and invited her in. "I'm sorry," Victoria apologized, "I know its late, but I wanted to make sure you were all right." She studied Catherine, something was definitely bothering her. "I'm okay, Victoria, thank you." Catherine was being evasive and Victoria was fully aware of it. She looked at Victoria and a look of fear and sadness came over her face. "My dear, what is it?" She sat down on the bed and motioned for Catherine to sit besides her, taking her hand. Catherine filled Victoria in on all the details of her capture. How they had touched her and how, she felt, if Nick hadn't come when he did, they surely would have had their way with her. Victoria did her best to reassure her. She was safe now, and the Barkley's would make sure that nothing like that ever happened to her again. The two talked until sunrise. Eventually, the conversation brightened to talk about Nick and little Victoria and getting back to working on her ranch. Catherine felt refreshed in the morning, a burden having been lifted from her by telling Victoria the entire story. Nick, Heath, Jarrod, Audra and little Victoria were all at the breakfast table when the two finally came downstairs. Nick ran up the stairs to help Catherine, she was still limping badly. She smiled widely at him as he placed his arm around her waist to guide her downstairs. He pulled out chairs for both his mother and Catherine. Nick sat down next to Catherine. "I do have something I want to add to the story" "What's that, Nick?" Audra asked. "I think we should start planning for a wedding." Nick took Catherine's hand and squeezed it, not taking his eyes off of her. "A wedding!" Audra said gleefully. "Oh Nick, Catherine, that's wonderful!" She got up and went around to the other side of the table and hugged them both. The rest of the morning took on a very festive mood, as the Barkley family discussed, what Victoria hoped, would be a most joyful and long lasting event. Victoria decided that a formal engagement party should be held at the house as soon as possible. Victoria led Catherine away from the dining room to discuss arrangements. Jarrod fetched his new box of cigars from his desk and the three brothers sat at the table smoking their cigars and talking marriage. The household was a whirlwind, as Victoria had practically invited almost the entire town of Stockton to the engagement party. Audra, little Victoria and Catherine spent a great deal of time at the dressmakers getting ready. The three brothers, tried their best to avoid being in the house, the ladies were definitely in control. Nick and Catherine spent little time together, the two weeks before the party. Every where they turned, someone was bound to be nearby. Stolen kisses and eyes fixed on each other from across the room seemed to be their only moments. The night of the party arrived and guests began to filter in. Victoria greeted each of them, full of charm and pride. Nick paced impatiently at the bottom of the stairs. Jarrod patted him on the shoulder, knowingly. Nick was dressed in formal attire, black suit and tie and a stark white shirt. His hair slicked straight back, he looked regal as he leaned up against the staircase and waited for his fianc‚e. Audra emerged at the top of the stairs first, looking lovely in a royal blue gown, her hair pinned up with elaborate curls. Jarrod and Nick watched as she came downstairs and both complimented her on her gown and how lovely she looked. Nick looked up and saw Catherine at the top of the stairs. His mouth dropped open as he saw the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen coming downstairs to him. She wore an emerald green gown, slightly off the shoulders with a plunging neckline. She had a pearl choker around her neck and cream gloves that came above her elbows. Catherine looked down the steps to see Nick waiting for her, how incredible he looks, she thought. His arm was draped over the banister and he was smiling at her, he looked even taller in his formalwear. The couple didn't get much time together, they were whisked around the room to meet everyone and make polite conversation. The evening had become completely frustrating to Nick, this beautiful woman was going to be his wife and he couldn't even get a chance to talk to her. He spied her across the room; she was watching him as she talked with another woman. Nick pointed to her and then pointed out to the French doors to the gazebo. Catherine nodded. He picked up two glasses of champagne and headed outside. He sat on the step to the gazebo and waited for her. The night was cool and clear. Stars hung over the sky like a blanket and the thick scent of roses filled the air. He looked up and saw Catherine coming to him. Nick stood and handed her a glass of champagne as she approached. He took her hand and kissed it, bowing. "Milady," he said, "it seems that we never get any time together anymore." "I know, it sounds silly, but I miss you." She put her gloved hands on his arms and slid them up around his neck, pulling him down to her. She kissed him softly on his lips and his cheek. Nick drew her back to him when she started to pull away, sliding his arms around her waist. "You look exquisite, Catherine. " He wanted to be with her desperately, "how long again is it, until we're married?" "Only six months, my love." "Six months!" It seemed like an eternity to Nick. "Cat, you have no idea how much I want to be with you." She stroked the back of his neck, "Oh, Nick, I have every idea!" They kissed again, briefly, "dance with me, Nick." The music filtered outside to them as a waltz began. Nick put his arm around her waist and took her hand. Catherine moved closer and leaned her head on Nick's chest. The couple danced together slowly in the moonlight. Part 7 Well, this is the last official installment. All that remains now is an Epilogue! There is an email only scene connected with this part - so if you'd like a copy of that love scene, please email me and you must promise that you are indeed, over 18. Here goes!: Nick and Cat spent little time together following the engagement party. Plans were in full swing for the wedding; which they had decided would take place in October. The air would be cool enough for an outdoor wedding, without there being too much of a chill. Besides, Nick didn't think he could take much more of all the planning and scurrying about for what he and Cat had hoped would be a simple affair. He found himself, almost thankful, for the upcoming cattle drive. He hated the idea of leaving Cat and little Victoria for three weeks, but getting away from all the planning would be ideal. Nick and Heath left with the men for the cattle drive. Jarrod surprised both his brothers by deciding to take time away from his office and go with them. The three brothers enjoyed the time they had together, the camaraderie, the laughter and all the hard work and sweat though none would come right out and say it, it was time well spent. They sat by the campfire at night, talking about everything, from the ranch to their lives and the women in them. Heath talked about Amy Morris and how things were going between the two of them. He had been seeing a great deal of her lately since the barn dance. Jarrod had met the new schoolteacher, one Hannah Strong, and had promised to take her to dinner when he got back from the cattle drive. It would be his first evening out with a woman, since Beth's death. He briefly discussed his own trepidation over the upcoming event, but decided it would be best not to delve too far into the subject with his brothers. Hannah was a lovely sight to behold though; she was tall and almost statuesque. She had long dark brown hair and deep brown eyes very close to being black. She was also very intelligent and although not a lawyer herself, both of her brothers and her father were lawyers and she was well versed on the subject. He smiled to himself; he was looking forward to spending an evening with her. Nick talked of being married, of having Catherine as his wife and being part of a new family. Catherine, Victoria and himself. There was no fear or nervousness involved, Nick knew that Cat was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He discussed their wedding plans, they had decided on a small wedding at the Barkley ranch. Hopefully, to be held outdoors with the two of them standing in the gazebo. But, if rain fell, they had plans for an indoor wedding in the drawing room. Heath asked, "so where are the two of you going for a honeymoon?" "Honeymoon? We hadn't discussed that. I mean, I hadn't even thought about it." Nick hadn't thought about it yet. "Well, she is from the city, Nick, maybe a trip to New York City or Philadelphia? Jarrod replied, he wouldn't mind going east himself, for a vacation. "Maybe," Nick muttered. He thought about taking her to the cabin the family owned or out to the canyon in Colorado, he hadn't been there since he was in his teens. But, Jarrod was right, Catherine was a city girl and used to refinements, he should treat her to a honeymoon in the city with fine hotels and restaurants. He decided when he got back that he would purchase tickets for a private car to Philadelphia and would ask his mother about fine hotels in the city, she had been there on a few occasions. Victoria Barkley and Catherine sat at the dining room table and addressed the invitations to the wedding. Little Victoria was out riding on her pony with Audra. "So," Victoria inquired, "where are you going for your honeymoon?" Catherine looked surprised at the question and took a moment to respond. "You know, we haven't talked about that yet, I really don't know." "Catherine, the wedding is only a few months away." Victoria put down the invitations and looked at her across the table. "I know, I know. Nick and I don't seem to have any time together to discuss things like that. I really haven't had the chance to think about it. Besides, who would look after my ranch while I'm gone." Catherine couldn't believe herself, they were finally going to have the chance to spend time together, alone, and they hadn't even discussed where yet. "You know, New York City is beautiful in the autumn, how about there?" "Well," she stopped to ponder for a moment, "maybe before I moved to Stockton I would have said yes to that idea." "But, not anymore?" "No, I don't think so. Victoria, Nick is happiest when he's outdoors or in wide-open spaces. I don't think he would enjoy the city very much." Victoria's face lit up; "I have a wonderful idea!" Catherine listened as Victoria told her about their cabin in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. A perfect place for a honeymoon, far away from the hustle and bustle of the world. And, she added, "since the wedding is in October, it'll be a little chilly perfect for the two of you to spend long evenings by the fire." "Victoria! You are a romantic! You and Tom must have had some wonderful times up there." Victoria nodded thoughtfully; it did bring back some wonderful memories. The two ladies put together plans to go up to the cabin, before the wedding, and fix it up. Catherine was pleased, and she knew Nick would be too. Three weeks went by and Catherine found herself looking out down the trail frequently for Nick to return. She missed him very much and so did little Victoria. "When will Uncle Nick be back?" was a question that Cat heard two or three times a day. Audra stopped by early on a Saturday morning, as Catherine was getting ready to lay out new hay in the barn. "I was headed to town, there are a lot of new things at the store, the seamstress wants me to do a fitting and there's a new millinery open at the edge of town. Won't you two come with me!" Audra was excited and planned a full day in town. "Audra, thank you for the offer. But, I have got so much work today" Catherine pointed at the bales of hay. "Well," Audra asked, "it's not a very fun way for a little girl to spend the day, how about I take Victoria in town with me?" "Oh, Momma, can I please?" Victoria really didn't want to spend the day helping her Momma in the barn. "Audra, are you sure you wouldn't mind?" "Of course not silly! Get your bonnet, Victoria, we're going shopping." Victoria hurried into the house and retrieved her bonnet from her room. She ran outside and climbed up into Audra's buggy, sat down and folded her hands in her lap. "I'm ready!" Catherine laughed, "I guess its settled, then." She kissed her daughter goodbye and waved them both off down the path. Cat pulled her hair back into a ponytail and set about getting the hay laid out in the barn. When she was finished, she brushed the dust and dirt off her black pants and white blouse and went inside to grab a bite to eat for lunch. She then headed back to the barn to groom the horses. She had just finished grooming Victoria's pony when a rider came up to the house she was completely wrapped up in the task at hand and didn't even hear him. Nick dismounted from Coco and peeked in the barn door. Catherine was busy brushing the pony; her red hair kept falling out of the ponytail and into her face; as she tried in vain to brush it back. "Well, you have to be the prettiest ranch hand that I've ever seen." Catherine turned in surprise to see Nick leaning against the barn door. He looked a little tired and worn. His jacket and black pants were covered in dust and he pushed his hat back up on his head with his gloved hand. She ran into his arms and he hugged her tightly. "Nick, when did you get back?" She was beaming from ear to ear, happy to see him home again. "I haven't been home yet, I told Heath and Jarrod I would be home for supper. So, did you miss me?" He picked her up into his arms and twirled her about the floor. "What do you think? I've only been looking for you every day and missing you greatly!" She hugged him tightly, not wanting to let go. "So, where's that little girl of yours?" He looked about the barn and outside for her. "She's gone into town for the day with Audra." "No doubt for a full day of shopping! And why didn't you join them?" "Oh, there was just too much to do here." Catherine added, "I just made some lemonade earlier, would you like a glass? "Sounds perfect! I think I've eaten enough dust for two cattle rides." He laughed, he was very parched and he noticed that he was a mess. He suddenly wished that he had stopped home to clean up before he had come over. The two went inside the house, Nick took off his hat and his boots, not wanting to track dirt into her house and left them out on the porch. He sat down at the kitchen table and watched Cat as she poured lemonade for the both of them. She put the glasses on the table and as she started to move away, Nick pulled her into his lap and she leaned up against him. He put his gloved hands on her shoulders. "Have I told you how much I missed you?" He whispered in her ear. He stroked her cheek with his hand and Catherine relished the feeling and smell of the soft, worn leather against her skin. He gently pulled the ribbon from her hair and let her hair fall around her shoulders. She leaned her head back against his shoulder as Nick bent to kiss her neck. He cupped her chin in his hand and turned her head to his waiting lips. . He kissed her softly at first, then it grew in intensity, as Nick felt her respond to him. She turned her body to his and pressed tightly against him, her arms wrapping around his neck. Nick's own passion for her was overwhelming him. "I don't think I can wait till our wedding night, Cat, I want you now." "I don't think I can wait any longer, my love, we've waited for each other for far too long all ready." Her words held a double meaning that Nick completely understood. They had both put off their love and passion for each other for too long. He took his gloves off and slid his hands down her shoulder to her waistline. He slowly undid the buttons on her blouse while he kissed her neck, firmly and passionately. He slid his arm underneath her legs and lifted her up, carrying her effortlessly to the bedroom. Later, Nick and Cat laid in her bed, exhausted and exhilarated. She had her head on his shoulder and gently stroked his chest. Nick enjoyed the feeling of her bare body against his and wished that the moment would not end. Cat looked out at the sky; the sun would start setting soon. Audra and Victoria would be returning from town at any moment. She sighed, they would have to go back to their normal routine now and probably not have any more moments alone until their wedding night. Nick saw the look in her eyes and gave her a knowing kiss on her forehead. "It's only a few more months, my love, then we're going to have a wonderful honeymoon!" Yes they are Catherine thought, as the two of them got dressed. Wait till Nick finds out about the cabin! Nick was thinking about his own plans and would talk to his mother about them, as soon as possible. Nick and Catherine had just finished dressing when the buggy pulled up. Victoria eyed Uncle Nick's horse immediately and went running into the house. She jumped right up into his waiting arms and almost knocked Nick right off his feet. "There you are sprout! Hey, now, wait a minute! I think you've grown since I last saw you!" He chuckled and hugged her in his arms. "I've grown?" Victoria grew very serious and gave herself a thorough looking over. "I don't see where, Uncle Nick." "You don't? Well right there Missy!" He grabbed her waist and started tickling her, sending Victoria into hysterics. Cat loved to watch the two of them together; it was obvious that they all had a lot of happiness ahead of them. After the tickling was finished, Victoria grew serious. "Uncle Nick?" "Yes?" "After you and Momma get married, do I still have to call you Uncle Nick?" Cat and Nick were both surprised by the question. Nick thought for a moment and asked, "well, what would you like to call me?" "Can I call you Pappy?" For a brief moment, Nick was completely taken by surprise and then the surprise turned to pride and pure joy. He beamed the widest smile that Cat thought she had ever seen. "You'd like to call me Pappy, are you sure?" "Uh-huh! "Cause you really kind of are anyways, aren't you?" Nick hugged Victoria tightly and held out his arm to Cat. She went to him and put her arm around his back and kissed Victoria on the cheek. Nick made it home just in time for dinner. Victoria welcomed her son home with a big hug. "Nick, I'm so glad you're home! Dinner is almost ready, go and wash up." Nick decided to talk with her about the honeymoon after dinner, that evening. "Oh, Nick" Victoria said as she finished listening to Nick's well laid out plans. "It really sounds lovely, but, think of how well accustomed Catherine has become to life out west. Don't you think she might enjoy the wilderness a bit?" Victoria was wondering how she would get Nick to stop his plans for a trip to Philadelphia without revealing her own plans for the cabin. "I don't know, Mother, she is a city girl. I think that Philadelphia will be a perfect choice." "But, Nick" she protested. "Now, now Mother, I think I know what I'm doing. Philadelphia it is!" Victoria sighed as she watched Nick leave the table and wondered about her next course of action. She decided to seek out her eldest son's help. She entered the study quietly; Jarrod didn't look up from his desk until she had sat down. "Well, Mother, you look like something is on your mind." Victoria filled Jarrod in on what was going on with the honeymoon and how she and Catherine had planned to fix up the cabin. "I'm afraid, I am partially to blame for this. It was my suggestion that Catherine would enjoy a honeymoon in the city. Would you like for me to speak with Nick?" At first, Victoria was pleased and then a worried look came over her face. Jarrod got up from his desk and went to her chair, putting an arm around her shoulder. He kissed her softly on her head. "Don't worry Mother, I won't reveal your secret." She smiled at him as he headed out of the study to locate his brother. Nick was sitting out on the steps of the gazebo, smoking a cigar. He fingered it thoughtfully, a small smile on his lips. "And what are you thinking about little brother?" Jarrod startled Nick; he hadn't heard him come outside. Jarrod went to the gazebo and sat down next to Nick. "About what lies ahead I guess." "About being married, perhaps?" Jarrod inquired. "Yeah. About Catherine and Victoria" Jarrod's expression turned very serious, "you're not having any doubts are you?" "Huh? No doubts at all! I was just thinking about what Victoria said to me today" A smile returned to his lips and he looked his older brother straight on, "she asked me if when Cat and I are married, if she could call me Pappy! I don't think I have ever felt more proud than I did at that very moment." Jarrod smiled and patted his brother on the back, "that is a fine thing to say, you'll make a wonderful Pappy, Nick, dare I say to an entire brood!" Jarrod was happy for his brother; he had never seen Nick so in love before and with a good woman. He had to suppress a small tinge of regret over what he may have had with Cat, but that was the past now. No, now he would concentrate on work. And Hannah Strong, they would be having dinner in town this Friday and he was looking forward to it. "Jarrod, did you hear me?" "What?" "I just asked if you thought I'd make a good Pappy?" Nick looked exasperated at his brother. "I'm sorry, Nick, I know you'll make an excellent Pappy!" "You were thinking about that new schoolteacher, weren't you?" Jarrod had his opportunity, "no, actually I was thinking about you and Cat and the honeymoon." "Yeah, what about it?" "I think I made a mistake. Cat's become accustomed to life out here. She's not a city girl anymore. I don't know that Philadelphia would be the best idea." "You don't? But back on the cattle drive, you thought it was a great idea." Now, Nick was confused. If not a city honeymoon, then where? Nick couldn't think of anything he'd rather do than spend time out in the wilderness, but would Cat enjoy that, he wondered. "I know, Nick, but the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to think that it may not be the best idea." Jarrod thought for a moment and continued, "she's never seen the cabin, do you think she'd enjoy that?" "Our cabin. Hmm, you know it might not be a bad idea. It's away from everything and we haven't spent much time together, since we announced our engagement." He pondered the idea, "hey, you know that is not a bad idea at all!" Nick stood up and patted his brother on the back. "Thanks, Jarrod!" With that, Nick disappeared back into the house. Jarrod got up and went to inform his mother that all was well. Victoria and Catherine could now go fix up the cabin and get it ready for the honeymoon and Nick would suggest the cabin as the spot and think it was all his idea. Victoria breathed a sigh of relief. In September, Cat and Victoria used the excuse of a weekend shopping trip to San Francisco to prepare the cabin for the honeymoon. They hung new curtains, laid out new linens and painted the place inside and out. They made sure that there was plenty of wood for long nights by the fire. At night, the two women sat by the fire themselves and talked long into the night like two girls on their first overnight adventure. Theirs was a friendship that would span a lifetime. WEDDING DAY Catherine nervously toyed with her wedding dress. She stood in front of the mirror and looked at herself, displeased. No matter what she did or how she stood, she just didn't seem to like what stared back at her. She had chosen a light beige gown, off the shoulder, with a choker of pearls. Since, she had been married before; she opted for no veil. Instead, she had entwined baby's breath and tiny seed pearls through her pinned up hair and soft tendrils framed her face and neck. A knock on the door interrupted her overly critical self-examination. "Come in" she said. She was surprised to see Jarrod open the door. He stopped for a moment, she was incredibly lovely and Jarrod once again felt the all too familiar pain inside. "What is it?" She asked, seriously, "my dress doesn't look right does it." "No, Catherine you look perfect. Absolutely, perfect." Catherine smiled sheepishly back at him, "thank you, Jarrod." She extended her hands to him and Jarrod closed them in his own. Briefly, her mind went back to when she had first arrived in Stockton and how they had been to each other. But now, she thought, she could count him amongst her dearest of friends. "Are you nervous, Catherine?" "A little, I guess. Okay, a lot!" She sat down on the bed and looked down, "Jarrod I want to make him happy. Really happy. When, I married Devlin, he seemed happy at first, but after a while, I think he got bored with me. He never spent any time at home with Victoria or me. I don't know what I did wrong, but I don't want to make any mistakes this time." Her eyes welled up with tears and she looked up at Jarrod. Jarrod sat down next to her, "honey, if Devlin was bored, then he was a fool! To have such a beautiful wife and daughter and never spend any time with them well, he just didn't know how lucky he was!" He took her hands again, "but do you want to know something? Nick knows, he knows how lucky he is to be marrying you and to have little Victoria in his life. He is very lucky and he'll never forget that. He will always be there for you and for Victoria." He tightened his grasp on her hands, reassuringly. "I know and you're right Jarrod, he will always be there for us. But you are wrong about one thing." Catherine said with a smile. "What's that?" "I'm the one that's lucky!" Jarrod smiled and brought her hands to his lips kissing it softly. He started to get up to leave the room and Catherine stopped him. "Jarrod, may I ask you a favor?" "Of course." "I know that you are supposed to stand up with Nick and Heath. I had originally asked Mr. Trenton to walk me down the aisle, but Mrs. Trenton wasn't well enough to make the trip." She looked at him, pleading with her eyes. "What are you asking of me, Catherine?" 'I was wondering if you would consider walking me down the aisle, or the path I should say, to the gazebo?" Jarrod thought for a moment, "it would be my honor, Catherine." Nick fussed over his tie; he couldn't seem to get it quite straight. His mother slapped his hand as he started to fidget with it again. "Nick, now will you please bend down and let me fix that! Honestly!" Nick obligingly bent down so his mother could straighten out the mess he made. Heath stood and watched the show from the corner of the room, his tie was perfect. Audra had put it on for him earlier. He found their antics amusing and couldn't resist snickering. Nick and Victoria cast him a glance that told him to be quiet or else. Jarrod opened the door into Nick's bedroom. "Well, your bride is all ready and might I say, Nick, she is exquisite." Nick smiled broadly, "she's always exquisite Jarrod, tell me something that I don't know. Is she nervous?" Nick asked him, seriously. "A little, perhaps, but nothing out of the ordinary." Jarrod sat himself on the chair next to Nick's bed. "By the way, Nick, I won't be able to stand with you during the ceremony." Nick took on a angry expression, "and why not?!" He demanded to know. "Because, your bride has asked me to walk her up the aisle!" "You're not her Father!" "Nick, I think it's a lovely idea!" Victoria smiled it was a perfect ending and a perfect beginning. "Jarrod, don't you have a lovely young lady waiting downstairs for you?" His mother inquired. "As a matter of fact, I do mother, and I think I shall check on her." Jarrod left Nick's room to go downstairs and check on Hannah. The two of them had seen a lot of each other the last month and Jarrod's spirits had lifted greatly in that time. Victoria took Nick's timepiece in her hand and checked it. "You and Heath better head downstairs. Its time." Heath patted his brother on the back as they both headed out of Nick's room. Victoria took the brief moment to wrap her arms around Nick, "I am so happy for you! And I've never been more proud than I am at this moment" Her voice was breaking and tears came to her eyes. "I love you, Mother" He wrapped his arms around his petite Mother and kissed her gently. He then turned and walked out and down the stairs. "I love you too, Nick" she whispered, smiling. Victoria followed the two of them downstairs and outside. She instructed the quintet, she had hired, to begin playing. Heath and Nick took their places as a small gathering watched in anticipation. Nick eyed the door that Catherine would be coming through, nervously. He spied little Victoria first, wearing a lavender gown with baby's breath in her hair. When she saw Nick, she forgot what her mother had told her about walking slowly to the gazebo and ran up to him, hugging him around his legs. Nick laughed and picked up the little girl in his arms. Nick put her down as he saw Jarrod come through the door with Catherine on his arm. Jarrod hadn't been exaggerating at all, Catherine was exquisite! He stood in awe of this beautiful woman as he watched her walk towards him. Catherine couldn't take her eyes off of Nick, so incredibly handsome. His tanned skin against the white shirt made him look all the more ruggedly handsome and Catherine beamed. Her mind raced at the thought of their honeymoon and long nights in front of the fireplace. Nick and Catherine joined hands when she reached the gazebo and they didn't take their eyes off of each other the entire service, except for one moment when Nick messed up on one of his lines and the couple broke out in laughter. It all seemed a blur; the two were deliriously happy and nervous all at the same time. "You may kiss the bride," the reverend had said. Nick had bent down and softly kissed his new bride, his eyes speaking volumes about more kisses to come. The reverend spoke again, "Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to introduce, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Jonathan Barkley." The reception went beautifully, Victoria had planned it well down to the minutest detail. Nick and Catherine hugged little Victoria goodbye; she was in good hands and would be staying with the Barkley's while they were away. As they pulled away, in their fully decorated buggy, Nick told her about his idea for their honeymoon, a little cabin the family owned. Catherine smiled, as Nick described it to her, unaware that Catherine had already been there. When they arrived at the cabin, Nick lifted Cat out of the buggy and carried her inside. At first, he didn't notice the fresh paint. But his eyes went to the bed and to the new curtains on the window. He put her down, with a puzzled look on his face. Catherine laughed when she saw his expression. "Hey! You knew about the cabin all along didn't you!" He put his hands on his hips in mock dismay. "Guilty as charged, Mr. Barkley." "Come here, Mrs. Barkley" Nick wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to him. He kissed her passionately and they hurriedly got out of the clothes that separated the two of them. Something they would be doing quite a lot of over the next weeks in the cabin. Nick held her tightly in his arms as she slept. He stroked her hair and thought about what lay ahead of them. He looked out the window to see the sun starting to come through the windows. No, he thought, I don't have to think about getting up or chores that need to be done. He could stay in bed with her all day if he wanted to and into tomorrow. But, his mind turned to Victoria, he found himself anxious to be a Pappy, to start life out as a family. Catherine dreamily opened her eyes and looked at Nick, she wrapped her arm around his neck and kissed him, softly. "What are you thinking about?" "I was just thinking about Victoria." He said thoughtfully. ""You miss her too, Pappy?" Catherine accentuated his new title. "Yes," he said with a small laugh, "I guess I do." Catherine thought, for a moment, biting her lip, "Nick?" "You thinking the same thing I am?" Catherine hugged him, "well, we have had over a week alone together and I know Victoria would love this place. You could teach her how to fish and we could all go riding." Nick jumped out of bed, "come on get dressed, if we ride hard, we could be there by nightfall." Nick and Cat, kissed briefly and rode from the cabin anxious to start their new lives together; as a family. Part 8 EPILOGUE As Jarrod was leaving his office, he spotted Audra's buggy in front of the dress shop. He walked across to the shop to look in on her. It was an extremely hot day and he took off his jacket and rolled his sleeves; as he walked. Audra stood on a small platform, while the dressmaker busily hemmed her gown for the Christmas ball. "Well, dare I say, I know who the belle of the ball will be?" Jarrod leaned through the open door, smiling at his sister. It was a wonder she didn't have a ring on her finger yet. "Jarrod! Oh, I hope so, this just seems to be taking forever!" She sighed, exasperated. He was lying of course, but she thought, it was nice to hear him say it. Jarrod had his own belle for the ball, Hannah. The couple had recently announced their engagement and the family could not have been happier for him. His spirits had lifted and he no longer spent all his hours at the office. Rather, he spent much of his time with Hannah, Nick and Cat. The four of them seemed to almost be attached to each other. Hannah and Cat had quickly become friends and saw each other almost daily. Nick and Jarrod seemed to enjoy a new closeness as brothers that they hadn't had since their teens. In fact, when Nick and Cat found out that a baby was on the way they shared the news with Hannah and Jarrod, first. "Jarrod?" Audra asked, "Has Nick gotten back yet?" "No, I'm afraid not, honey, but he should be home any day." "He better get back soon! He'll miss his own baby being born if he doesn't hurry." Audra was angry with Nick, leaving to buy cattle when the baby was only a few weeks away. Why, anything could happen! Jarrod sensed his sister's anger, "now don't you worry about that Sis, the way that Nick's been going on about this baby a stampede couldn't stop him from getting back on time." "On time? Oh my goodness, I completely forgot!" She went to step off the podium and nearly tore the hem of her dress. The dressmaker looked up at her, infuriated. "Jarrod, I forgot, I was supposed to pick up Cat and Victoria and take them to the house for dinner, with Mother." She looked at him, pleading. Jarrod sighed, "I'll go get them, I was on my way home anyway." "Oh, thank you, Jarrod" She gave him a kiss on the cheek and shooed him off. Jarrod got in the buggy, leaving Jingo for Audra and headed over to Nick and Cat's house. The newest Barkley couple had decided to live in the home that Cat had bought. Only though, on the agreement from Victoria, that one day they would move into the big house. Nick and Cat couldn't have been happier when she found out she was with child. Little Victoria was so excited at the idea of having a baby brother or sister. The little girl was growing like a weed and was now attending school and she adored her teacher, Miss Strong and the other children. The little girl was becoming a little tomboy. She had indeed, learned how to fish when Nick and Cat brought her to the cabin and she was an expert tree climber. Nick had easily transformed into being a father and loved his new family dearly. He was so excited when Cat had told him about the baby and relished all the preparations. He had even hand carved a crib for it and it stood waiting in the bedroom. Jarrod rode up to the house and was surprised not too see Victoria out playing in the yard. As he stopped the buggy, little Victoria came running out of the house, all out of breath. Jarrod got out of the carriage quickly, sensing that something was wrong. "Uncle Jarrod!" She cried, "you gotta help Momma, please!" Jarrod ran inside the house. Catherine was lying on the floor; a broken chair lay beside her. He knelt down beside her and took her hand, "Cat?" he whispered. "Jarrod, I slipped, I was trying to get down those candlesticks, I'm sorry" She was ghastly pale and her hand felt clammy in his. She looked at him and saw the worry on his face. "Come on, Cat, let's get you up off the floor" Jarrod put his arms around her, not an easy task with her swollen belly. As he did, she screamed in pain. "Jarrod, I'm so sorry! It seems the newest Barkley wants to make its entrance!" She smiled, weakly at him. "Wh-what did you say?" "I'm having a baby, Jarrod" She looked at the horrified expression on his face and had to keep down a small laugh. "Jarrod, I'm having a baby now." "I'll go get Mother, I'll be back in no time." He started to get up and Cat grabbed his arm. "No, Jarrod, you don't understand. There isn't time for you to get Victoria. My water's broke; I AM HAVING THE BABY NOW! She was nearly yelling as another contraction hit her full-force. "What do I do?" His voice was trembling. He had never helped with a birth before. What if something happened, he thought, he couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to Cat or the baby. "Jarrod," she spoke with a soothing tone, "it will be okay. I've had a baby before. I can do it, but I need your help." She made an effort to stand and Jarrod held onto her while she got to her feet. The two of them slowly, made their way into the bedroom and he helped her get on the bed. Jarrod's fingers felt like they were being crushed, but he didn't notice the pain. He let Cat grip his hand as the contractions grew in frequency. She began her first push and Jarrod tried to be both coach and midwife, coaxing her and comforting her at the same time. He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the baby's head crown. Cat was doing very well; the labor was easier for her the second time. With one last push, the baby had fully emerged and it was very upset to see all the light and the people and it wailed loudly. Jarrod picked up the baby and cut the cord. Tears streamed down his cheeks and he was not ashamed to show them. He handed the tiny infant to its mother and helped her gently wash off the newborn. Jarrod sat on the bed, next to Cat, with his arm around her and kissed her on the forehead. He marveled at this little Barkley. The baby had a shock of black hair and Nick's hazel eyes. Cat lovingly cradled the baby in her arms and looked up to see little Victoria standing in the doorway. "Come here darling, would you like to see?" Victoria went to her mother's bed and looked at the tiny infant. "Momma?" she asked, "was I that little when I was born?" "Yes, you were Victoria, and actually, I think you were a mite smaller than this." Victoria's eyes widened and she touched the baby's little hand. "Cat, Victoria, I'm home! Hey, Jarrod, what are you doing here?" Nick jumped down off Coco, shouting all the way to the door. Jarrod stopped him in his tracks and put a finger to his lips. "Nick, my boy, have I got a surprise for you!" Jarrod led him into the bedroom. Nick stopped when he reached the doorway. Cat lay in bed, with Victoria next to her. She looked pale and was covered in sweat. But she smiled widely at him. "Cat, what is it are you all right?" She motioned for him to come over. Nick saw a tiny baby wrapped in a blanket, sleeping, next to Cat. Nick looked at her tentatively and knelt beside the bed. Cat picked up the sleeping infant and gently put it into Nick's arms. "Why its so tiny!" He whispered. He brought the baby's hand to his own, in awe of this little creation. "When did this happen?" he stammered. "Only a short time ago, Nick, Jarrod helped me. I don't think I could've gotten through it without him!" Nick turned to his brother; "you helped with the delivery?" He paused and whispered "thank you." Jarrod hugged his brother and made his leave.
