John Coe (1736-1822)

Untitled John Coe is the son of John Coe born 1717, died 30/06/1782 and Elizabeth Love born 1717, died 14/04/1807. Both John & Elizabeth were born and died in Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire.

John Coe married Martha Toull in Histon. Witnesses at the marriage were Thomas Hobson and William Hayman. They had 6 children; Elizabeth, Rebecca, John, Phoebe, James and Martha.
John Coe was a shoemaker.

Histon records show that on 27/09/1766 "the church wardens and overseers of Waterbeach hereby own and acknowledge John Coe to be an inhabitant legally settled in Waterbeach. Signed and sealed September 27, 1766. Attested by John Webb and John Camps. Certificate allowed by S.W. Powell and W. Weals, J.P. Smith Lucas."

In 1838 a petition for release of Smith Lucas was signed by John Coe. In 1798 the Histon Land Tax Records show John Coe as occupier of land and paid 8 shillings in tax. The proprietor of the land was Wilson.

The Cambridge Master and Apprentices 1763-1811 records in Histon show the following apprentices to John Coe, cordwainer/shoemaker:

21/02/1775 John Glover, term of indenture 7 years, premium paid £5 10s.
20/11/1779 John Money, term of indenture 5 years, premium paid £5.
29/11/1781 William Ward, term of indenture 6 years, premium paid 1s.
28/02/1785 Thomas Brooks, term of indenture 6 years, premium paid £5.
25/02/1793 William Jeapes, term of indenture 5 years, premium paid £5.
20/09/1794 William Newman, term of indenture 6 years from 25/03/1794, premium paid £5.
26/11/1799 James Priest, to John Coe, senior and junior, term of indenture 7 years, premium paid £15.
20/01/1802 William Ward, term of indenture 6 years from 01/10/1801, premium paid £6.
