Doughgirl 1920
My mother was born on February 14, 1920. In that year, Warren G. Harding became President and Calvin Coolidge became Vice President. The workweek had been shortened from 60 hours to 48 hours so folks had some extra time for fun and follies. Parlor games were the rage with Moh jongg and crossword puzzles heading the list of favorites. The Flappers did the Charleston and the ladies bathingsuits stopped shockingly at the knees...Another popular pasttime was sitting on flagpoles.... Prohibition lasted from 1920 til 1933....which gave rise to bootleggers and the invention of the tommygun which was the favorite weapon of bootlegging gangsters. Also in 1920 a special kind of mail delivery started called Air Mail..Regular postage cost 2 cents..The first radio broadcast took place at the Pittsburgh, PA radio station with the call letters KDKA... The most daring song from that time was 'Roll 'em Girlies, roll 'em,' which encouraged girls to roll down their stockings and 'show your pretty knees.' Which was inspired by the bathing suits showing the knees. More popular songs from the twenties were: Bye, Bye Blackbird,I'll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time, I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate,I Wanna Be Loved By You (Boop Boop-a-Doop) Some popular sayings back then were: Cat's Meow, Cat's Pajamas, Bee's knees, which all referred to someone that was thought to be nice looking. Silent and early sound movie films starred Mary Pickford, Wallace Beery, Buster Keaton, Marie Dressler, Lon Chaney, Fatty Arbuckle, Louise Brooks, Charlie Chaplin, and Marion Davies, Clara Bow, Mary Aster, among others. Agatha Christy's first novel became published, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles. And the 19th amendment took effect that allowed women to vote. In 1920, there were no tv sets, no VCRs, no microwaves, no cell phones, no satelite dishes, families ate at home because there were no McDonald's golden arches....Doughgirl 1920, you've come a long way... WONDERFUL MOTHER God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He moulded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me. --Pat O'Reilly My Mom gave me a lot of wonderful memories. I can remember coming home after spending the afternoon at the nearby Stoner Place. It was the year I would start school, 1957. Hanging in the back room were two little dresses she had made me that day.
When I was little the feed used on the farm came in feed sacks. Those feed sacks were so pretty. My Mom would get enough of each design to make what she had in mind. That would mean several trips to the nearby country store over a period of time...until enough sacks had been bought and emptied. The feed sacks were carefully washed, dried, and ironed... Then, it was time to cut out the new outfit.
My Mom has always been an excellent seamstress. She could always make any of her children pretty clothes without even using a pattern. By the time I was twelve I could sew up a skirt without using a pattern, too.
My Mom taught me a lot of useful skills like how to cook, how to sew, how to garden, and how to be a hard worker. When I had home-ec in school, I already knew how to plan, fix, and serve a meal. I already knew how to sew, too. Thanks to the caring Mom I have that took the time to teach me.
My Mom is a great cook. She usually doesn't use a recipe; but, when she does its like how one might use an outline; a recipe to Mom is just a rough draft...she always adds her own special touches.
Just lately, she made a chocolate cake from a cake-mix; but, I knew when I first tasted it, she had added some special ingredients....and she had to admit she had....
When I was growing up, Mom would bake bread and pies...not just one or two....when Mom makes pies she makes at least six pies. I have seen 14 pies lined up on her counter....enough for family and any company that might stop by....And her bread making is out of this world.... I grew up on homemade bread. I especially like her fried bread....She has no recipe for bread; she just takes some flour, adds some of this and some of that......
My Mom has a green thumb and it doesn't take long for anyone to realize that. Her front porch is filled with thriving plants of every color and description..... Petunias, moss roses, coleus, anything and everything....Growing up, we never lacked for healthy air because the windows inside were lined with her beautiful geraniums, coleus, Christmas cacti, and on and on....Those windows still are filled with Mom's healthy houseplants...She has one plant that she first got back in 1939...Now that's a Master Gardener!!!!!
I can go on and on about my MOM. She has always been a fine role model to all her children. Thank You, Mom, for all the lessons you've taught me. And thanks for always being there when anyone needs help. My Mom's favorite sayings I remember from childhood...
