Review:

The Homework-Online site has many excellent study guides, and this Lord Of The Flies guide is no exception. The Chapter Summaries cover each chapter individually and include the main events of the chapter, followed by a commentary of how the author weaves meaning into the novel using these events. Each Character Analysis describes the physical appearance of each character, as well as their role and significance to the novel. There is a general discussion on the Theme of the novel, followed by a very involved series of explanations about Symbolism. Each of the following symbols are described individually and their true meaning explained; The Beast, Ralph, Jack, Piggy, The Conch, The Signal Fire, Piggy's Specs and The Lord Of The Flies. This is an invaluable resource as it is all too easy for pupils to overlook the fact that characters in the novel may also be symbols. Here for example, Jack is a symbol of anarchy, Ralph is a symbol of order and integrity, and Piggy symbolises knowledge and morality. The Important Quotes are not explained but are fairly self-explanatory and useful quotes to be aware of. A short biography of The Author is included, and interestingly, an artist's impression of what A Map of the island would look like. This could be very helpful, as it would enable pupils to visualise more clearly where particular events took place. The User's Forum is a message board facility where pupils can read or post questions or comments about To Kill A Mockingbird, and the LOTF Online Store allows pupils or teachers to shop online for supporting materials to the novel.
