Review

The Novelguide site offers very long and detailed chapter-by-chapter Novel Summary. Similarly, its Character Profiles also a tremendous amount of useful information about each of the major characters and many of the more minor ones. I particularly recommend the section on Metaphor Analysis as it clarifies the significance of the metaphors or symbols that are; Beast, Conch, Facepaint, Fire/Smoke, Island, Glasses, and The Parachute Man. The Theme Analysis acknowledges that there is no one central theme in The Lord Of The Flies, though there has been much speculation about this over the decades since it was written. It goes on to discuss in depth though, William Golding's response to critics and what he meant when he said that the theme was to trace the problems of society back to the sinful nature of man. The Top Ten Quotes are not explained but do relate to many important symbols and events in the novel. The Biography gives a brief account of Golding's life and the impact that his experience during World War II had on the writing of this novel.
