Review:

The entire novel, Lord Of The Flies, is summarised in the initial, general Summary, which gives a quick, handy insight into the novel as a whole. Later in the site however, there are also more detailed, individual Chapter Summaries. Within these summaries is also contained a commentary section so that in addition to reading a condensed version of the events of each chapter, pupils will also have the significance of these events explained. The Context section explains the relevance of the novel in the context of the time in which it was written and in the light of the information that to some extent, it was based on William Golding's experience of the violence and savagery of human beings during the War. The section on Analysis gives account of some of the many possible and very different interpretations of this bizarre story. It also highlights the fact that this is a tale of the fundamental struggle between the sense of obligation to behave morally and obey rules, and the impulse to seek power over others and satisfy one's own desires. The profiles of the Characters given here are clear and detailed. The Study Questions are particularly helpful as they deal with the important areas of symbolism, the theme of religion in the novel, the role of the littluns to the action in the novel, and the relative merits of Jack and Ralph's leadership qualities. The Quiz is a series of eighteen multiple-choice questions which pupils may complete online and submit to receive a mark instantly, or complete as a printed worksheet to be marked by teacher
