ALAK NITE 2000
NOSTALGIA
“Arabian Nights… what a
wonderful place.. Arabian Nites…”
For a whole year seniors with a dreamy look in their eyes kept telling us what a wonderful time they had on their first hostel nite. We never had a clue until it first struck us. Hostel Nite, the very phrase sends ripples of electricity thru’ the hostel.
Every
year, all hostels in the IITM decide to celebrate their dwellings. Dreary,
Droopy hostels falling upon in god knows how many ways are transformed
overnight into a dreamland. Last year the theme for the Alak hostel nite was
‘Arabian Nite’. It struck me and left me enchanted.
Camels
at the entrance and explicit curtains had made me sit up and take notice of the
gate for the first time. A genie hanging from the top of the ‘C’ wing, a carpet
and a monkey hanging right up in the air, one couldn’t help but being filled
thrilled.
Hostel
nite is not just a night of revelry, but also a culmination of weeks of
frenetic activity. It’s an event for which the whole hostel comes together: and
for the first time I saw teamwork at play.
Now
to get on to the nite- after the opening speeches by various secretaries, chief
guest and prize distribution, the crowds warmed up on a spoof on ‘Cholay’
presented by us, the first years’. The play was a big hit, infact, the 4th
years offered a treat if we had replayed the skit. The audience loved the entry
of Veeru (Maanas); the confusion on the stage had the audience in splits. Pussy
played the role of Basanti to perfection, Khunger looked delightful as Mausi.
Soon after, was a dance show by the first year yearites which included OK, (The
biggest goofer), Cigar and rest which was up to the maximum enthu’. After this,
was a skit put up by Jhatka and Co.-, which led onto western music. BD and
Barry on the keyboard, XXX rapping alongside Suna made for some wonderful music.
We
then broke for grub, as we call it. The grub was the best of all times in IIT
for the year. As we sat on the lawn one couldn’t help but feel proud of our
hostel. The hostel looked decked with lamps lit all over. The wonderful
lighting in the garden added to the audience.
It
was truly an amazing and unforgettable nite, and I guess I have the same dreamy
look in my face as I am writing this.
