REPRIEVE
When the heat came pouring
down,
and the leaves did in it drown,
then their bloated bodies
wafted,
on a thin-lipped breeze
Hot and harsh the Sun's glare
beat,
in this furnace there was heat,
minds and wills and tempers
melted
into pools of sweat
And the earth's parched throat
did call,
into each life some rain must
fall,
Underground the earthworms
smilingly slept,
dreaming of water
And then the clouds they moved
their arse,
and right overhead they parked
their cars,
and threw down shimmering
shattering ropes,
vain attempts to anchor firm
Lack of skills they cannot
hide,
yes, these clouds often
collide,
with flash and bang and
assorted thunder,
followed by grumbling about
dented fender
And now the handsome world in tip-top
boots
the trees in best green sunday
suits
And the sun, abashed, blushes
pink,
behind a cloudy veil.
