Penney Named Second-Team All-District

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin junior guard Kirk Penney was honored with an NABC/Pontiac second-team all-district selection, the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced today. Penney leads the Badgers in scoring at 14.4 points per game, 11th in the Big Ten. He was named conference player of the week twice, on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.

Wisconsin is located in District 11. The District 11 first team consists of Frank Williams (Illinois), Dwayne Wade (Marquette), David Bailey (Loyola), Marcus Taylor (Michigan State) and Henry Domercant (Eastern Illinois). Joining Penney on the second team are LaVell Blanchard (Michigan), Rick Rickert (Minnesota), Brian Cook (Illinois) and Clay Tucker (UW-Milwaukee). All honorees are now eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I all-American team to be announced at the end of the season.

Penney has led the UW to a 14-11 record, a 7-5 mark in the Big Ten, good for fourth place. His 33-point performance against Marquette on Dec. 22 is the most for a Big Ten player this season. He has also recorded three “double-doubles,” including in each of the last two games.

Wisconsin takes on first-place Indiana tonight at 7 p.m. The game will be televised locally by WISC-TV.
