Penney Named to Wooden
Award Preseason All-American Team

MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin senior guard Kirk Penney was named to the Wooden Award
Preseason All-American Team, the Los Angeles athletic Club announced today. A total of
50 players were chosen, based on last year’s individual performance and team
records.
Penney was a first-team
All-Big Ten selection last year as he led the Badgers to a shared of the Big
Ten Conference regular season title. His 15.1 paced the squad as he scored in
double figures 23 times. He was named Big Ten Player of the Week three times,
tying Indiana’s Jared Jeffries for the most weekly honors. Penney, a
native of New
Zealand,
represented his country in the 2000 Olympics and will do so again at the
upcoming World Basketball Championships.
Penney was one of five Big
Ten players named to the team. The others were Brian Cook of Illinois, Tom Coverdale of Indiana, Purdue’s Willie Deane and Chris Hill of Michigan
State. This is the second time in three years Wisconsin has had a player named to the Wooden preseason team.
Mike Kelley was one of the 50 players chosen prior to the 2000-01 season.
The Wooden Award is presented
on Sunday, April 13 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
