WORLD WAR II “WHEN WE WERE KIDS WE WENT TO WAR”

In an effort to preserve the history, memories, and lessons learned from World War II the World War II Memorial Education Foundation worked with the legislature passing Public Law Chapter 112 Laws of 2000. This law was established to provide oral history presentations, documentation, and other materials to assist the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and Educators in the development of a curriculum for the use in kindergarten through grade 12.  The project will preserve for the education of Washington’s school children the memories and history of our state’s citizens who served their country and state as members of the armed forces or through national or community contributions during World War II. This has been accomplished with 165 interviews through audio and videotapes, films, stories, printed transcripts, and the two-hour video “When We Were Kids We Went To War” to be utilized by the teachers and students in the classroom.

We have presented a series of  workshops with the teachers in the state through the 9 Educational Districts for the presentation of this material. (See this web site for more info:)

To implement this project the legislature appropriated $300,000 through the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for this current biennium.  This was the last opportunity for the Veterans of this generation to tell the story of World War 11 from their personal prospective and not the glorified sanitized Hollywood version. The video series is a cross section World War 11 from 1941-1945. The project has included World War 11 era volunteers from all services of air, land, and sea plus representation from ethnic, feminine, American Japanese detention centers.  The combat and non-combatant veterans and civilian volunteers from the home front who worked in war industry and/or who contributed to the war effort.  Time was of the essence or this entire heritage would have been lost.

The documentary produced “ WHEN WE WERE KIDS... WE WENT TO WAR”.  This has recently received a GOLD AURORA AWARD. Other companies receiving this are names like, The American Red Cross, MSNBC, Sesame Workshop, Disney MGM Studios..... This is another wonderful recognition for a powerful show. The documentary now has 2 Tellys, 2 AXIEMS,  1 Platinum Aurora  and 1 Omni  awards.
