Fifty-seven years have passed
since Bob Hope first entertained our country's men and women in uniform, and f or fifty
years, the USO has brought solace and comfort and laughter to millions of GIs all around
the globe. Whenever there was a need, Bob Hope was there. There isn't one GI
whose spirits haven't been lifted and loneliness relieved for an hour or two by the
talented and dedicated gypsies sent out by the USO. Thanks to him, hundreds of thousands
of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have had their spirits lifted. In 1997, by an act of Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton, Bob was made an 'honorary veteran." Upon receiving the award, Bob said, "I've been given many awards in my lifetime - but to be numbered among the men and women I admire most - is the greatest honor I have ever received."
