South Canterbury had its biggest snowfall in 60 years in June this year, with 75-90cm of snow in Fairlie, 40cms in Ashburton and 30cm in Timaru power was lost to 16,000 homes, some had to wait 3 weeks to be reconnected. The roofs of several buildings also collapsed, due to the weight of snow (see my pictures). Record low temperatures were recorded with one farmer in Fairlie recording -15.3 degrees and some inland rural stations recording -25!!
