THE SALLINGER'S There is no information available from the Sallinger side of the family about who Frank Sallinger's grandparents may be or where they come from. THE COCHENOUR'S There are many variations of spelling of the Cochenour name. Some of which are Gochenour; Gochenauer; Gochnaeur; Cochnouer; Cockenor; Cockenour; Cocknour; Cohenour; Cokenour; and Koughnawer along with Cochenour; Coughanour and many others. Our ancestor Daniel Cochenour, actually had the birth name of Gochenour but after many years in Pennsylvania, the spelling became Cochenour and for his line of descendants, remained with that spelling. . Daniel Gochenour was born about 1785 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near Woodstock, the 10th of 11 children to Jacob and Elizabeth Roads Gochenour. Daniel married Barbara Jordan Feb 21, 1807 in Shenandoah County, Va. The 1810 census shows they had 2 sons under 10 years of age, David and Isaac. In 1814, Daniel purchased land (50 acres for 200 lbs.) from his father in law, John Jordan and sold it June 7, 1819 to John Stover and Magdaline Gochenour Stover, a sister of Daniel's. Personal property taxes were levied during that period on white male tithables over 16, slaves, horses, stud horses, farm animals, etc. Daniel appears on the tax lists of 1807-1815. The family moved to Rockingham County, VA where they appear in the 1820 census as having two sons under 10 yrs, 1 son 10-16 and 3 daughters under 10 yrs of age. He purchased land (56 acres-$600 on North Mountain) in Rockingham County in 1819 and sold the property in 1823. The tax lists of Rockingham County from 1823-1827 show Daniel Cochenour as owning 56 acres, North Mountain and having personal property of 1 or 3 horses. The family then moved to Westmoreland County, Pa and appear in the 1830 census of South Huntingdon Township and showing family members as Daniel; Barbara; John; Jacob; Abraham; Mary (Frank's future mother); Susan; Rebecca; Catherine and two other females--names not known. Sons David and Isaac were living in Virginia in 1830. The 1840 census shows Daniel (listed as Daniel KAUGHNER) as living in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County with the household members as Barbara; Jacob; John; Mary and Catherine. The 1850 census shows Daniel and Barbara living in Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, Pa. Listed with them is their daughter Mary (Sullinger) and two children-Lucinda A. Maxwell age 8 and Franklin B. age 1 which must have been their grandchildren. Franklin B. is most likely the son of Mary and it is surmised that Mary and "Alda" Sallinger had divorced or at least separated at this time. Daniel died March 30, 1854 and is buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County, Pa. . Barbara Jordan was the daughter of John Jordan. There is
little known about the Jordan family. After the death of her husband
Daniel, Barbara remained in Rostraver Township living with her grandson
Daniel Cochenour and her sonDavid. Barbara died Aug 26, 1877 and
is buried next to Daniel in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.
