People with anorexia are constantly hungry, but by restricting their food intake and exerting a means of control over their body, they can get caught up in their illness and avoid the issues which sent them down the world of disordered eating in the first place. The main symptom of Anorexia Nervosa is extreme weight loss (15-25% of body weight). Sufferers have an intense fear of gaining weight and often perceive themselves as over-weight. The usual onset of the illness is 14-18 years, but older and younger people are also equally affected. One on ten sufferes is male and at 10% of sufferers will die prematurely either as a direct result of physical complications due to their illness, or as a result of suicide.
