Following concerns expressed by residents of Taff's Well and Nantgarw,
Councillor Adrian Hobson held a meeting with Taff's Well Community Council
to discuss their plans.
The
proposal is to locate a single "youth shelter" in the field opposite Ty
Rhiw cemetery. There is also a proposal that a "sports wall" -
incorporating football goal posts - should be built at Tawelfryn.
The Community Council have been trying to implement the
project for almost 3 years. Adrian said that the initiative needed to be
re-launched and agreed that the Police should be asked to Chair future
meetings.
Adrian
said;
" The
Community Council have been pretending to be the County Council. Without
the expertise and financial resources of the County they have failed to
make any progress with their schemes. Trying to freeze the County out of
their plans was folly.
The
Youth Initiative needs to be re-launched and I have recently spoken to the
Police, RCT Youth Service, RCT Sports Development officers and RCT Leisure
Services about how we might support a genuine community partnership.
I have
also met Tawelfryn Community Centre Committee to begin to look at what
their community might need as opposed to what the Community Council is
suggesting.
I still have serious
reservations about the idea of a youth shelter but I will support the idea
provided it has the backing of residents as well as kids. We need to take
the advice of the Police about suitable locations".
In 1999 Adrian oversaw a survey by the Council's Youth
Service which concluded that there was a need for better facilities for
young people in the locality.
The survey identified the need for sports
facilities. Councillor Hobson, a qualified youth worker, arranged a
meeting last year with senior Councillors and senior officers from the Education Department
of Rhondda Cynon Taff to talk about resources (money and staff) to support
a suitable project.
THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL FLATLY REFUSED TO ATTEND
THE MEETING!
We
think that proves that they put party politics before the community.

assistance you can e-mail
Adrian.
