A former building
inspector has claimed he paid a cash bribe to Labour Councillors to gain
his job with the Council.
Brian Privett, now 65
worked for Rhondda Council and made the claims before a National
Assembly Investigation.
He claimed that the
Labour-run Council had an ingrained culture of backhanders and payment for
promotion and that members of the Labour Group would misuse Council
resources, enjoying days out at the taxpayer's expense and having work
done on their houses with Council building materials.
Mr Privett gave
evidence to the Nantygwyddon Investigation. In relation to the choice of
an isolated site for the controversial tip he said that certain councillors felt they could use
the
opportunity to dump anything they liked on the remote site for extra cash
on the side.
Mr Privett also claims
that he was told Gwyn Evans, former Chief Executive of Rhondda BC paid
"thousands" for his job. One of the Labour Councillors accused by Mr
Privett of organising Mr Evans' "rise to the throne" (the position of
Chief Executive) is still a Labour member of the RCT Policy Committee.
Since taking control of
RCT in 1999 Plaid Cymru have introduced a rigorous and transparent process
for the appointment of senior officers. We believe this is one reason why
the Council is rapidly improving in every area. Labour refuse to
participate in this open and scrupulously fair method of appointing
staff!!
