Chapter One
(kat)
"AAH! I HATE men!" I screamed as I threw my pillow at the wall. Don't get me wrong. They're not ALL bad. It just seems that every time I get involved with a guy, I always wind up getting hurt. So, I hate guys.
"Ok, Kat. Calm down," my best friend Erin said into the phone. "What exactly happened?"
"Oh, boy. Ok, long story," I said as I got a drink from the refridgerator, cradling the phone between my ear and my shoulder. "Me and Sean went out for lunch at the Allen Street Grill.(*AN: That's a real restaurant near Penn State.) That's where I told him that I was thinking about transfering from Penn State to Florida State. At first he didn't even believe me. He was just like, 'oh whatever.'"
"Then what happened?" Erin questioned.
"Well, I told him that I'm going to Orlando tomorrow to visit my dad, and that you're coming with me...Oh, speaking of that, you're all packed, right?"
"Yeah, go on."
"So, anyway, I told him, and he basically went ballistic. He was like, unbelievable! He actually told me he couldn't go the whole summer without 'getting some.' That's a direct quote, there."
"Oh, my god! You're kidding!"
"Nope. Not that I'd give him any, anyway. I haven't yet, why start now?"
"Good for you. So he dumped you?"
"Correction. I dumped HIM."
"Awww, I'm sorry, Kat."
I shrugged. "It's ok. Anyway, I have to go finish packing. I'll pick you up at 8:00 tomorrow morning, ok?"
"Sounds great! I'll see ya then!"
"Bye, Erin." Ok, hold up. Before I go any further, I should probably explain. I'm Katrina Johnson, otherwise known as Kat. I was born in Orlando, Florida. When I was 15 years old, my parents got divorced. Having no choice in the matter, I had to move to Philly with my mom, while my kid brother stayed in Orlando with my dad. I haven't seen my dad since then. I've seen my brother twice. He's come up to visit a couple times. He's 12 years old now. I'm 21. For some reason, my mom never let me go back down to Orlando to visit my dad. Go figure. Anyway, I got through high school. I'm at college here in State College, but I'm thinking of moving back down to Orlando for my senior year. Hence this visit.
'RING RING' Whoa. Talk about bringing me off of my cloud.
"Hello?"
"Hi, sweetie. It's mom."
"Oh, hey! What's happening?"
"Nothing much. I just wanted to say good-bye, and let you know that I'm still against this idea."
"Why, mom?"
"I just am."
"For god's sake, I'm going to visit my brother and dad, who I love very much! What's the problem with that?"
"Dear, you just have to realize that you left a lot of baggage down in Orlando."
"Baggage? Elaborate, please."
"You know what I mean."
"I didn't CHOOSE to leave like that. You made me. Besides, everyone has probably forgotten about it by now. It's all in the past."
Mom sighed. "All right. If you say so."
"I do say so." I headed upstairs to my room with my cordless phone so I could pack. "Look, mom. I can't talk for much longer. I just don't want to leave the state on a bad note. Things will work out, ok? I promise."
"I know. You're old enough to handle these things, now."
"I have been for awhile now. Anyway, I have to go. I'll talk to ya soon, ok?"
"All right, sweetie. I love you."
"Love you too, mom. Bye!"
"Toodles!"
Ugh. I love my mom dearly, but she can be such a worrywart. Oh, well.
(aj)'RING RING'
"Yo?"
"You'll never guess what I just heard!" Nick Carter said smugly into the phone.
I hat guessing games. "Out with it, Carter," I said, rolling my eyes. "You know I hate guessing games. What's so important?"
"Well, Aaron told me that that Mike told him that his sister is coming to visit for the summer."
"Mike who?" That boy is messed up. As if I'm supposed to know all of his brother's little friends.
"Mike Johnson, shiznit. You know, her had this sister named Kat? You used to date her back in the day?" I almost dropped the phone. "AJ, you ok? I just thought I'd let you know. I mean, you live next door to her dad."
"So nice of her to pay us a visit after 6 years," I said sarcastically.
"Chill out, dude. I heard that her mom never let her come visit."
"Still..." I wasn't really paying attention to Nick I had plenty of questions for kat, most of them she probably wouldn't want to hear. I couldn't wait to find out why she shut me out of her life...
