Chapter Six
Blast From The Past--6
(KAT)
I woke up the next morning around 10:00 to the sound of a lawnmower. Why can't people just cut their grass in the evening? Then they wouldn't wake me up. I dragged myself out of bed and took a shower. I put on jean shorts and a Nike t-shirt. I wasn't in a good mood, so I left my hair down and wore my glasses. I just didn't have the energy to put my contacts in or pull back my hair. I went downstairs to find Nick and Erin talking in the kitchen.
"Why are you here?" Ok, so I'm blunt. Sue me.
"It's nice to see you too, Kat," Nick said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes. "It's fabulous seeing you again, Nickolas. Why are you here?" I joked.
"Well, I WAS at AJ's house, but he decided to mow his lawn. So, here I am." So, he's the jerk who woke me up. Figures.
"Well, when you go back over can you give him his jacket back?"
"Nope." I REALLY hate guys.
"And why not?"
"I'm not stupid, Katrina." Ok, when Nick uses my full name, he means business. "I don't know what happened between you two last night, but I know it wasn't good. SO, you're giving it back to him yourself. That way you can work it out." Nick gave us a satisfied smile, obviously proud of himself.
"Erin?" I pleaded.
She held up her hands in a 'don't shoot' gesture. "Sorry. I agree with Nick. For as long as I've known you, you've never been a wimp. Never. Why start now?"
"You go, girl!" Nick snapped his fingers. Oh, lordy.
I raised my eyebrows. "If you ever do that again, I'll be forced to hurt you."
"Sorry."
"It's all right." I picked up AJ's jacket and headed next door.
(AJ)
I was in the kitchen, getting snacks for my guests when the doorbell rang. "Hey, Bri! Get that, will you?"
"Alrighty, then!" he said in his little Jim Carrey impersonation. No matter what he tells you, it's not THAT good. Trust me. He ran to the door and opened it up. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but a minute later he called me over. "AJ! There's someone here to see you!" he said in a singsong voice.
I went to the door and Brian was standing there with Kat. "It's a girl," he whispered. No, really? "I'll leave you two alone." He ran back into the house, yelling like an idiot. I swear, that man has the maturity of a 4 year old.
"Here's your jacket," Kat said, holding it out.
"Thanks." I took the jacket. Did she always have glasses?
"Yea, umm, thanks for leaving it last night. I kinda needed it."
"I figured you would."
"Still, thanks. Well, I'll be seeing you around, I guess." She hopped down off the front stoop. I knew that if I didn't stop her, we'd both be acting like idiots the whole summer.
"Kat, wait." Well, at least she turned around.
"What?" This isn't gonna be easy.
"We need to talk." There. Am I good, or what?
"About what?"
"Ok, that was about the stupidest thing I've ever heard."
"It was worth a shot. Besides, I don't wanna have to end up screaming at you again."
"Ok, but it's my turn to scream anyway."
"So sorry, your majesty."
I just shrugged. "Wanna come in?"
"Not really, but I will anyway." Ha. Ha. She was always SO funny. We walked inside. "Well, it certainly looks.....different."
"Thanks. I'll take that as a compliment." We sat down at the kitchen table, and Kat began playing with an apple. And no one said anything. I sighed. This is gonna be a LONG summer.
