Chapter 17

I awoke to the sound of my alarm. “Ugh, what time is it?” I heard Alex ask. “6:30. Why?” “Why? Why so early?” “Concert day. Rehersals. Sound checks. The whole 9 yards.” “Why so early?” “C’mon sleepy head, time to get up.” “Oh, alright.” “I get the shower first.” “That’s fine.” We both got showered and dressed. “Time to go.” “Jesus Christ, don’t even have time to just sit around and do nothing in the morning? What’s with you people?” “Work. Now come on!” We left in my car. I didn’t see anyone else, so I figured they were already there. “We’re here!” shouted Alex. (Alexandria had woken up on the car ride.) “That’s so weird. Sara would always do that.” “We have a lot in common and haven’t even seen each other for 20 years.” We walked into the arena. Everyone else was there. “Bout time, slow pokes,” said Nick. “Alex,” I said. “You can hang around with us fellas, or go hang with the girls.” “Thanks for the invite, but I think I should go meet the girls better, where are they at?” “Down that hall, third door on your right.” “Thanks.” She left. “How was your night?” asked Nick. “What do you mean?” “Did you get jiggy wit it?” “WHAT?!?!? Hell no. I just met the girl. What on earth makes you think I’d do such a thing?” “I dunno, I figure, she’s so much like Sara, you might start from where you left off.” I glared at him. “Just joking. Settle down bud,” “Nick, Alex is a completely different person than Sara. Yes, I may have a thing for Alex, but that’s not the point, you sick-o. I don’t care if you were joking or not, that’s sick, you know, just plain sick. I’ve only known her one day!” I left him in disgust. All day long, we had the usual day. (rehearsal after rehearsal.) Before the girls were about to go on stage, I saw Alex and she seemed to really be getting along with the rest of the girls. She and Megan almost looked like they had the tight relationship that she and Sara had shared. “Hey Alex!” I said. “Hey what?” She came over to me. “Where you gonna be at during the show?” “Here I guess. Why?” “You can’t see anything here.” “Oh, well, I can still hear it.” “Move up to the edge of that first row of chairs. Tell the security guard there that I sent you there and show him your backstage pass.” “Ok.” She left. I watched to make sure he let her stand there. He did. While we were singing, I’d always look down at Alex. She looked like she was having a great time. She was always dancing or swaying to the music. I bet she would’ve sung, but she didn’t know the words! During “I’ll Never Break Your Heart,” I completely thought about her and Sara. I wondered what Sara might think if I told her, or if she knew, that I thought I was falling in love with her sister. After the concert, we all met again backstage. “Man, I’m tired,” I said. “Me too,” said Nick. “I don’t know if I even wanna go and party now. We had to long of a break, I’m outta shape.” “Your always outta shape,” said Alex. That was just the thing Sara would’ve said. “I know exactly what you mean Alex,” I added. “Hey! Shut up!” said Nick, screaming like a little kid. “Wanna just go back to the room?” Megan asked Nick. “Yeah, sure. You guys comin?” “We’ll be there in a few,” said Alex. She was starting to feel like she fit in. She would speak up for herself and give her own opinion. “Shall we go?” I asked her. “Sure, why not.” When we got back she said, “I think I’m gonna hit the hay. I’ve had a rough weekend.” “I’m sure. You gotta leave tomorrow don’t you?” “Yep. Go to a few more weeks of school and get out of that place. Oh, by the way, Meg told me what she majored in.” “And....” “What?” “Exactly, what?” “Oh, I didn’t know you wanted to know.” “Of course I wanted to know, stupid.” “Don’t call me stupid, retard!” “Don’t call me retard, stupid!” “Dear God. Here we go acting like little 4th graders. Do you wanna know?” “Yes.” “Ok. I’ll tell you then. She majored in elementary education.” “Well, I think I’m gonna shower then climb in bed. Aight with you girl?” “Sounds aight ta me.” I took my shower and found Alex sound asleep in her bed.
