Chapter 5
I went histartical. “Doctor! Nurse! WE NEED A DOCTOR NOW! HURRY UP
DAMN IT! GET THE HELL OVER HERE NOW!” The nurse that had come earlier
and a man in a white doctor’s suit came in (I’m guessing he was the doctor).
“Look out,” he said. “We gotta get her into surgery. NOW!” They rushed her
out of the room. I chased after her.
I started saying, “Sara! No! Don’t take my baby!” Now I know how she felt
when her Grandmother was being rushed into the operating room. They went through
some doors, which I to was going through when a nurse grabbed me by the shirt and said,
“Sorry sir. You can’t go past these doors.”
I said, “But I have to get to my baby!”
“I know, but rules are rules. I’ll tell you the very second you can see her, OK?”
“No! It’s not OK. I need her now!”
“Sorry.” I walked away. How could she do this to me? The one time I needed
her most, I was kept from her. Then I realized I should tell the others. I walked up to the
nurse’s desk.
“Excuse me,” I said. “But could you tell me where I could find a phone?”
“Sure,” she said. “Just go down this hall and take a right. By the elevator is a pay
phone.”
“Thanks.” I struggled to find some change in my pocket while walking toward the
phone. Luckily, I had 35 cents on me. I didn’t want to bother with 1-800-COLLECT. I
dialed Nick’s cell phone. I was guessing everyone would probably still be together.
“Hello?” he answered.
“Hey Nick.”
“B? What do you need?”
“Um, well, Sara, she, um.” I couldn’t explain it. I just wanted it all to be a dream.
I just wanted to wake up with Sara laying beside me. He loving arms around me again.
“Yes? What about Sara? What’s wrong with her?”
“Well, she opened her eyes for a little while.”
“What? That’s great.” He proceeded to tell the others the good news.
“But, she, um, her heart evidentially quit beating or something. They won’t let me
see her and I don’t know what’s wrong with her. I’m scared Nick. What if something
happens to her? What will I do without her Nick? I’m scared.”
“Brian. I want you to go sit down and take a nap after I hang up. We don’t need
you worrying about that bad stuff. I’ll be there in a few. Then we’ll see what’s wrong
together. OK?”
I was surprised at the authority coming from his voice. “OK, I guess. Hurry.”
“I will. Sit tight. See ya.”
“See ya.” I hung up the phone. I did just as Nick had told me to do. While I was
asleep, I had this wonderful dream. Sara and I had our own place. I saw her cleaning
windows with me playing with our oldest girl, Alexandria, in there too. There was a play
pin in the room where she was cleaning. The boy started to scream a happy scream. She
and I both walked over there and said, “Isn’t anyone playing with you Nicky?” We all
started to play peek-a-boo. Even Alex did. Sara kissed me. I kissed her back. That was
the way it was suppost to be. Not this way. Unless, it was going to come.
“B?” asked Nick. “Are you awake?”
“Now I am.” I didn’t tell him about the dream. “How is she?”
“She’s stable, but not in the best of condition. The nurse just told me when I got
here cause you were sleeping.”
“Oh. Can I see her?”
“I dunno. Let’s go see.” I followed him to the nurse’s desk.
The nurse said, “Yes, but you must put on scrubs first. She’s in ICU.” ‘Just like
her Grandma was,’ I thought. We went up to ICU and put on scrub like told. When we
found her bed, I gasped. This body did not look like my full of energy Sara. There had to
have been a mistake. Then I finally drifted back to reality.
“Sara,” said Nick. “It’s Nicky-boy.(her nickname for him) We’re here if you
wanna know. You’ve gotta get better Sar. You’ve got a great life to look forward too.
A great career, a great husband, a great kid, great friends, everything.”
“Sara,” I said. “You’ve gotta pull through this. Please, baby, please!”
“Time to go,” said a nurse. “Visiting hours our over.”
“Fuck you,” I said. Not know what I was saying.
“Sorry sir, I’m married. Now, please leave.” I wasn’t going, until Nick dragged
me out of there.
“Brian, you’re coming back to the hotel with me. You’re gonna sleep in a bed and
you’re gonna like it. OK?”
“No.”
“Come on now, don’t make me hurt you.”
“Sure, whatever.”
“Brian, I’m serious.”
“No Nick! I’m staying here.”
“Fine, stay here. You can’t come back then.”
“That’s fine with me.”
“Good. This is your last chance!” I knew I should go with him. But what if she
was to wake up again? Or at worst, die? I wanted to be there for that. I was saved by a
doctor approaching us, or so I thought.
