He had no idea what possessed the woman who lived in the apartment directly above him to run her vacuum at five in the morning. The roar of it rolling from her wood floor to the carpet robbed him of his sleep every morning. It was the kind of thing where you were half-asleep and half-awake and could probably lay there for another hour or two but every day there was the vacuum. Mulder half-stood up and half-fell out of his couch as he got up to get his running clothes on. He was almost ready and tying his shoes when the phone rang. He walked back into the living room and over to the desk. It was only a little after five-thirty so chances were it was not just a friendly hello. When he picked up a receiver he heard a nervous voice. "Hello, Mulder? Is that you?" a shaking man's voice asked. "Yeah this is Mulder speaking." "This is Senator Matheson. I need you to meet me at my house right away. Hurry. 64 Loughborough Dr." Mulder made an attempt to reply but found he was only talking to the dialtone. Mulder sighed as he headed back into the "bedroom" with no bed in it to change. It looked like he'd be better off if he had just stayed in the work clothes he'd been sleeping in. Senator Matheson Residence 64 Loughborough Dr. Washington, D.C. June 16, 1994 5:58 a.m. There were a couple police officers standing on the marble steps leading to the Senators house. They merely stared at Mulder and he walked up the steps and knocked on the door. A woman in her late forties answered the door and led him to the living room where the senator was waiting. It was obvious that the man had not slept last night and lines of worry crossed his face. The senator managed a weak smile as he shook Mulder's hand and then gestured for Mulder to sit in the armchair to the right of him. Matheson cleared his throat before he began to speak. "Mulder, I asked that you come here today because I need your help. My seventeen year old daughter, Sarah," he turned his head toward the picture on the coffee table. A young brown haired girl with big brown eyes was waving at the photographer as she stood on the deck of a yacht. "I convinced Sarah to go to this party on Saturday night. I just wanted her to meet some new people and socialize a little. The girl who was having the party, Cari, said that Sarah could stay the night along with a bunch of other girls. So I didn't think of it when Sarah didn't come home that afternoon. But then I got a call from Shelly, Cari's mom, saying that Sarah's jeep was still at her house and they didn't know where Sarah was." The senator shook his head, "We don't know if she ran away, if she was kidnapped, is she just went with someone or..." The Senator let the sentence drop off. Mulder nodded his head understanding the Senator's feelings of anguish, "I'll find her Senator, I promise." A look of relief washed over the Senators face and he told Mulder that the police were currently at the Idler's house. Idler Residence 456 Browne Manor Hunt, Virginia 6:30 a.m The sun had barely peeped above the horizon as police officers slowly walked the grounds of the Idler property, the ends of their navy blue pants wet from the dew that had not yet evaporated. Mulder turned from the window of the solarium as Shelly and Cari Idler entered through the doorway connecting the solarium and the kitchen. It was obvious that both of the women had been crying. Mulder waited for the two women to sit down on the wicker chairs before he asked "Did you see Sarah with anyone on Saturday, Cari?" Cari looked down at her lap, "I didn't really see anybody that night. Its just a blur, I was playing hostess and there were just so many people..." She looked up at Mulder, "I'm ashamed to say this but we didn't even notice she wasn't here when we went to bed. Sarah is one of those people where that can happen. I don't know, maybe I thought she ditched the party and went off with Acacia..." "Who's Acacia?" "I guess you could say Acacia is Sarah's bestfriend. They're both part of the same group, Purity something or other." Before Mulder could ask what Purity something or other was a man entered the patio. With a sad look on his face he said quietly, "Agent Mulder, we found her." ------------------------- Send Feedback To The_Lady_Disdain@mailcity.com Thanks :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Click here for a chance to win airfare to Vegas for you and 20 friends, $15,000 and a suite at Bellagio for New Year's from Expedia.com.
