During the past year Scully had gotten used to the
many forms of the Mulder smirk. There was the "I know
something you don't know." smirk, the "Gee that was
smart." smirk, the "Aren't I Just Too Cute?" smirk
and finally the incredibly annoying "Told you so."
smirk.

But today she discovered a new smirk, today Mulder
was sporting the "I Just Got Scully To Blow Off
Everything To Help Me" smirk. She also discovered
that she hated this strain more than any of the
others.

Or maybe it was just her migraine talking.

Scully was rubbing her temples when they pulled into
the circle drive of the Idler home. She immediately
took her hands away from her face when she caught
sight of the house. If houses could speak this one
would say money. Money was everywhere, in the
professional landscaping, the gated entrance, the
prestine white pillars, the huge wooden frontdoor, it
all screamed money.

A woman around Margaret Scully's age solemly greeted
them at the door and escorted the two agents into the
solarium. On the yellow loveseat sat a bleary eyed
seventeen year old.

Scully quickly read the situation and sat in the
wicker chair across from the loveseat. She softly
began to question the young woman, "Cari, I
understand that Sarah's death is still new to you and
you're probably very upset but we need to ask you
some questions. Ok?"

 Cari nodded.

"You told my partner," Scully didn't notice that she
incorrectly called Mulder her partner, "that you
couldn't remember the last time you saw Sarah. Do you
still not remember?"

The girl took a deep breath, "I think that the last
I saw," Cari swallowed at the painful memory,
"...Sarah was when she first got here...I just
figured she was in the crowd somewhere."

Mulder spoke up, "Last time you said you suspected
she ditched the party and went off with a girl named
Acacia."

Cari wringed her fingers, "Yeah I figured she might
have done that too."

"What can you tell us about this girl named Acacia."
Mulder asked as he learned back in his chair.

Cari thought for a moment, "Well, she's weird I
guess, always dresses in black and all that stuff.
She's never really talked to me. I think she moved
away a few years ago and then moved back. The two of
them were inseperable. She and Sarah belonged to the
same group. Pure Of Heart or something. They couldn't
eat meat, drink beer, smoke, or use drugs."

Something in Scully's mind clicked, she leaned
forward slightly in her chair, "Do you know this
girl's last name?"

Cari looked at the two agents like they were crazy,
"Of course I do, Acacia Kuhn lives three houses down
from here."

The agents thanked the girl as they left for the
Kuhn home.

Mulder and Scully were shown to the sitting room
as the maid wandered up the spiraling stairs to
find Acacia. They heard some yelling coming from
somewhere upstairs. The maid returned to the room
in a huff and informed them that Acacia would be with
them in a few minutes.

The two agents sat in silence for several minutes
before they were startled by the sound of boot clad
feet stomping down the marble staircase. When they
looked through the doorway they found a tall scrawny
girl glaring at them.

The girl plopped in the loveseat which Mulder was
sure cost more than a month of his salary. Mulder
and Scully introduced themselves to no reply.
Acacia's eyes were surrounded with black eyeshadow
and they narrowed at him as she asked, "What do you
want?"

Mulder smiled nervously, "Acacia, that's a
beautiful name, you know in-"

"In Greek it means 'thorny' and the tree itself
symbolizes rebirth and immortality...yada yada yada
I've heard that pick up line before." Acacia said
Flatly as she picked at her chipping navy nailpolish,
she didn't even look up, "You want to talk to me
about Sarah."

Scully spoke up, "Yes Agent Mulder and I would
like to ask you some questions. We are trying to
understand the situation she was in before she died."

Acacia leaned forward not bothering to brush away
her long black hair, "We all have our own ways
of grieving, Agent Scully. You've interrupted mine
and it's really pissing me off."

Scully bit her tongue and stared at the girl as
Mulder asked, "Where were you on the night of June
fourteenth?"

Acacia snorted, "I sure as hell wasn't with
Sarah!"

 "Why's that?"

"I had tickets to the OPM concert but her dad
wanted her to go to some yuppie party down the
street." Acacia shrugged, "She went to the party to
make her dad happy. He doesn't like me." Acacia got
up from the chair and started walking out of the
room, brush her hair behind her ear as she did so.

The heart drawn on her hand reminded Mulder,
"Wait."

Acacia stopped, turned around and crossed her arms.
"What?" she said crossly.

"What can you tell us about Sarah's involvement with
Pure Of Heart?"

Acacia glared at Mulder. "Jeff Hernly. 17 Harman
Street. He'll tell you everything you want to know."
With that Acacia clomped up the staircase and slammed
her bedroom door.

"So Scully what do you think?" Mulder asked as he
pulled on to Belle Street. He hadn't tried to talk to
her since they pulled out of Browne Manor, figuring
she had a headache.

Scully smiled, her headache had gotten better, "I
think Acacia was definately hiding something. What's
your take on it?"

"I'm not sure yet." He replied enigmatically.

Scully rolled her eyes. He was waiting for her full
theory so he could shoot it down using his spooky
intuition. "I think it was a test. Cari Idler said
that Pure Of Heart people weren't allowed to use
drugs. Sarah's tox report showed that it was the
first time she ever used anything much heavier than
advil. Someone in this group wanted to see how pure
she was. Sarah failed and accepted the drug in a GHB
haze. I think she paid for that mistake with her
life."

"Could be. Could be." Mulder murmured mysteriously
as they turned into Harman Street.

A wide eyed blonde nineteen year old opened the door
and quickly ushered them inside. His flipflops made
clicky noises as he lead them down the hall, "God I
still can't believe Sarah's gone. It's like, she was
just sitting here in a meeting a couple days ago and
now she's..." Jeff cleared his throat, "Acacia called
me and told me you guys were coming. It's ok that
your here for now, my parents aren't home. They worry
too much."

Mulder and Scully sat down in yet another living
room and began their questioning.

Mulder asked, "What can you tell us about Pure Of
Heart?"

"Plenty. I started the Pure Of Heart group about two
years ago with a couple older friends who've moved
since then. My friends were addicts and they realized
what terrible effects the drugs were having on them.
With the help of some other people who were trying to
kick various habits we started Pure Of Heart. It's a
kind of support group, we go to shows together, we
have meetings, and basically help each other stay
pure. Some people still drink soda and eat meat. Some
don't. The main thing is nobody drinks alcohol,
smokes or does drugs. Some members give in to the
temptation and leave the group, some, like me, plan
on doing this forever." Jeff shrugged.

"Is Acacia one of the ex-addicts?" Scully asked.

Jeff sighed, "I'm sorry, I can't tell you either
way. It's part of the trust system we have. The past
is the past. People have all different kinds of
problems that they use this to exorcise. What I can
tell you is that Acacia joined as soon as she moved
here six months ago. A month later Sarah joined."

"What can you tell us about Sarah Matheson?"

Jeff smiled, "She was a nice quiet girl. Very
introverted, she could just lose herself in her
thoughts and when you came up to her she practically
jumped out of her skin. I always thought that was
funny. She went out with Acacia alot. They were
really good friends. I don't think Sarah's family
understood Pure Of Heart at all. Probably thought it
was a cult or something."

"Where were you on the night of June fourteenth?"

"The whole group went to the OPM show. Well, except
for Sarah. She had to go to some party." Jeff's shook
his head. "And now she's dead." Jeff put his head in
his hands.

Mulder looked at Scully and nodded toward the
doorway.

Scully said, "Thank you Mr. Hernly for your time.
You've been very helpful." They both got up showed
themselves out.

As they walked to the car Scully asked, "What do you
think the chances are of Acacia being an ex-heroin
addict?"

Mulder shook his head as he got into the driver's
side, "If we're going to understand any of this we
need to understand Sarah Matheson first." He started
the car and headed to Senator Matheson's.

* A. I apologize if anyone is for some reason
offended by the similarities between the fictional
Pure Of Heart and the real Straight Edge group. This
story was not meant to be harmful to Straight Edge.
It is a wonderful philosophy and I subscribe to it
wholeheartedly.

B. The band OPM was probably not in existence in '94
but I just love their new song, "Heaven Is A
Halfpipe" so I put 'em in there anyway.
