Take
one kilo of Hartshorn place it in a pyrex baking dish and
replace the lid. Place the dish on a direct strong heat (careful
not to break the dish). After some time a smoke will rise inside
the container and a white powdery crystal will form on the
inside of the lid, leaving a black dreg in the bottom. Collect
the sublimated powder and discard the black impurites. Repeat
this process at least 3 times with the same sublimated powder.
This is the method of sublimating (and therefore purifying)
hartshorn. It is possible that by the third time your sublimate
will turn yellow-orange.
Next place this sublimate in a flask (or well sealed glass jar)
with absolute alcohol for 1 week in a warm place. Afterwards
decant the tinctured liquid. Distill this liquid and replace it
onto its dregs (circulate it) at least 3 times. On the final
distillation keep the clear spirit separate from the dregs. This
clear spirit, which has taken a subtle tincture from the
ammonium sublimate, has now a mineral character which will allow
it to lift a tincture from some metallic salts. Basil Valentine
suggests its use in the extraction of an oil from the glass of
Antimony.
(Caution. Only use the clear
distillate. The oil (tincture and salts) of ammonia is poisonous
and should not be included in an final metallic tincture. For
more insight into the KM read the Triumphal Chariot of Antimony
by Basil Valentine.)
