We use the present simple in the following cases:
* Facts, or what is known as the truth: E.g. Cats have four legs
* Habitual actions or habits. E.g. I make my bed every morning
* When giving instructions, directions. E.g. Go to the end of the street and turn left.
* Future events which are facts. E.g. The bus leaves tomorrow morning.
* Verbs that describe a state or feeling. E.g. I believe John to be innocent / Jane feels happy with the move
* When telling a joke: E.g.There is this man that goes up to another man and tells him ...
* Journalistic language:headlines. E.g. "Thief takes all the money from city bank"
We use the present continious in the following cases:
* Future planned actions. E.g. Next year I am going to travel around the world
* For facts that occur continuously (past, present, future all at once) E.g. I am studying English at the usc
* Actions that are still occurring now, in this moment of time. E.g. Jane is baking a cake
