Doug in Florida Nov. 1997
There is a story behind this photo.Doug always said he
would never fly in a jet
and he would never go to Florida. When a friend asked him to go to Florida
with him for two weeks, he agreed, much to my surprise
and his own. We were planning a trip to Italy in the
spring of 1999
and he decided he should try flying a short distance
first.
He did
not like the jets - too big and too crowded, he said
when he phoned the first night from Florida.
(when he returned from overseas in 1946 he flew small
planes and loved them.)
He stayed in Florida for only three days. He was so
homesick that he boarded a bus at 11 p.m. on the third day
(all flights
were booked solid). After changing buses seven times,
in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston,
as well as other large cities, and only boarding the
wrong bus once,
he made it home, after 38 hours of travelling.
He vowed that he would never leave home again. This photo is testimony to
his Florida vacation.
