FIFTH GENERATION
JONATHON INGERSOLL 5(Joel4, Samuel3, George2, Richard1) b. 29 June 1742 Mass., d.ca.1807 at Grand Manan, N.B. It is not known whom he married.
It is presumed that this Jonathon is the Jonathon Ingersoll, Progenitor of the Grand Manan Ingersoll family, who came to Grand Manan from Maine ca. 1786 with a family of at least three. There is little doubt that he is the Jonathon Ingersoll who served in Machias, Maine during the American Revolution.
"ENGERSOLL, JONATHON",Private, Capt. Thomas Robbins Co...enlisted 12 June 1778, discharged 1 Dec. 1778;service 5 mos. 20 days under Col. John Allen, company raised for the defence of Machias>"
'INGERSOLL, JONATHON, Private, John Hall's co., Col. Benjamin Fosters (Lincoln Co.) regt., roll made up for service for 1 mo. and travel out and home, endorsed "service at penobscot", also, Private, in Artillery Co., payroll dated Eastern Indian dept., Headquarters Machias, march 9, 1782 for wages of persons employed in doing business in Eastern Indian dept. and troops stationed at Fort Gates, Machias, under Col. John Allen, Commander in Chief of Indians in said department; enlisted July 5, 1781; service to April 15, 1783, 21 months, 11 days.
Among 21 signers of a petition at Chandler River (present day Jonesboro) were Jonathon Ingersoll and Jonathon Ingerson Jr. Because their names were not on subsequent lists, the year could have been 1779/80 or a little earlier.
In 1804
Jonathon Ingersoll received a land grant
(Lot #4 - 100 acres) on Grand Manan and stated that
he had lived here 18 years. At this time he had four
members in his family, about 50 acres cleared,7 tons
of hay, 5 head cattle and 20 sheep.
