"I was born and brought up in the west of Scotland where education is divided on religious lines and I frankly do not think that, if you want to have the kind of community spirit that we're talking about, religious education of that kind assists. . .  

"If you are brought up to believe in the exclusivity of your own religion, then it seems to me that it's very short step from that to believe in the exclusivity of your own views and your own opinions, and in a society which is increasingly multiracial it seems to me we should be doing our best to break down barriers of that kind rather than encouraging then to spring up."
