I was informed by my vet, at board meeting of the organization for which
I
work, about a glider that he had at his office who needed a good home.
The
little glider was a male and a few months OOP and was brought in for
a
really bad infection. The lady who brought him in could no longer handle
the
increasing financial cost of constant trips to the vet and wanted the
little glider put to sleep. My vet, who now is the Executive Director
of The Palm
Beach Zoo at Dreher Park, said he never puts animals to sleep if there
is a
chance they could survive. So Dr. Zeitlin called me up after he had
the
little guy stabilized and I picked him up a few days later. Poor little
guy
was missing a lot of his fur...but he was active and so very happy
to have
a new home. He loved to be held and chirped because he was so happy.
We have
two other gliders but we keep them separated from the little guy, who
we
appropriately named Lucky. His fur gray back and he put on weight and
he is
still the most friendly glider. A few months ago the infection came
back
and we took Lucky back to the vet. Dr. Zeitlin performed surgery and
prescribed
antibiotics for a few days. The infection went away and has now just
come
back again....Lucky seems to be his active little self...eating and
playing, but it looks like a pea is stuck under his fur under his chin.
So he will
go back again on Wednesday for surgery again if he needs it. Wish us
luck!
Update.. 3/14/2000
Lucky is doing just fine...he did not need to have the infection extracted
because it miraculously went away on its own the day before we had him
scheduled for surgery.
He is our little sweetie pie!
Update..3/24/2000
We recently lost a male his mate Phoebe was getting depressed being
by herself....Lucky..
had his own cage next to the other cage. We decided to put Phoebe in
with Lucky and they seem to like each other...she is not so sad now...and
Lucky...Well, Lucky is one happy little glider. He
has never had another glider companion so this is a very happy time
for him. I do not want them to breed because I'm not sure if Lucky's recurring
infection was due to some genetic flaw. Phoebe has never had any health
problems...she is a little overweight...but not fat. Lucky is a little
on the plump side, but he is actually in the normal weight range...he used
to be really thin...and when we got him...he had lost most of his hair.
Now he has a nice coat and is very playfull and very sweet. We hope his
personality does not change now that we have introduced a female.
