Shortly after the boys' conviction, the original eight-year sentence was raised by the then home secretary, Michael Howard, to fifteen years. It was ultimately overturned, however, due to the fact that Howard had made the judgment as a politician, and did not have the legal authority to raise the tariff. Howard stands by his decision.
