After Neighbours
The ones that made it.
Kylie Minogue (Charlene Robinson) - Forget her so-so movie
roles; it's Kylie's phenomenal music career that has brought her
international stardom and critical acclaim. She has demonstrated an
admirable adeptness at reinventing herself too...
Guy Pearce (Mike Young) - He has made one of the most
impressive leaps from Neighbours thanks to a career making movies in
Hollywood. He started out in the excellent thriller LA Confidential back
in 1997 alongside fellow Neighbours alumni Russell Crowe.
Jason Donovan (Scott Robinson) - The former Neighbours star
launched a successful pop career here in the UK notching up several No 1
hits before a period in the wilderness. An appearance on I'm A
Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in 2006 revived his UK fortunes and he's
currently acting in spoof ITV soap Echo Beach.
Alan Dale (Jim Robinson) - He played a central role on the
Aussie soap for eight years and is now having remarkable success in
America. Alan Dale has had strong roles in shows such as The X Files",
"The West Wing", "ER", "24", "The OC", "Lost" and "Ugly Betty". He also
had a cameo role as the Romulan Praetor in "Star Trek:
Nemesis" (he's pictured with Vanessa Williams).
Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson) - After leaving Neighbours the
first time around, Stefan released a minging record in 1989
entitled Don't It Make You Feel Good? It managed to get to No 16 in the
UK charts and while he was over here, Stefan appeared in several shows
including Casualty and The Bill. Now back on Neighbours
Russell Crowe (Kenny Larkin) - He appeared in four episodes of
the soap way back in 1987 before moving on to a bigger career in movies.
He gave a searing performance in the excellent 1992 film Romper Stomper
before international acclaim, and an Oscar, followed with 2000's
Gladiator.
Jesse Spencer (Billy Kennedy) - In Neighbours, Billy was part
of a great double act with Toadfish Rebecchi (played by Ryan Moloney).
Actor Jesse Spencer is now based in LA where he stars in the hit Hugh
Laurie medical drama House.
Daniel MacPherson (Joel Samuels) - A bona fide Neighbours
heart-throb, Daniel MacPherson's sporty prowess was put to good use in
the soap and there were numerous instances where his physique was on
display. In the UK, he appeared in The Bill for a year playing PC
Cameron Tait.
Natalie Imbruglia (Beth Brennan) - She starred in the soap for
three years before launching a pop career. Natalie has had a steady
music career but she hasn't really matched the 1997 success of her
first internationally released single, Torn.
Holly Valance (Flick Scully) - Her single Kiss Kiss was a big
hit in 2002 and she recorded two albums: Footprints and State Of Mind.
Her brief flirtation with a pop career ended when her record label
dropped her. She has now returned to acting.
Delta Goodrem (Nina Tucker) - She joined Neighbours having
already signed a record deal. Her role was written to promote debut
single Born To Try. Delta's personal life includes a liaison with tennis
star and fellow Aussie Mark Philippoussis and she's engaged to former
Westlife star Brian McFadden.
Craig McLachlan (Henry Ramsay) - Like so many of his former
co-stars, Craig McLachlan capitalised on his popularity by attempting a
music career. His best remembered UK hit was Mona which got to No 2 in
1990. Today, he's busy acting in Australia.
Kimberley Davies (Annalise Hartman) -
The Aussie babe
has recently appeared on UK TV screens thanks to an advert for the soap
you can believe in. Famous for her role in Neighbours, she was signed up
for the fifth series of I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!
Mark Little (Joe Mangel) - His Neighbours role brought him
great success in the UK. In 1994, he replaced Chris Evans as presenter
of Channel 4's The Big Breakfast and Defending the Caveman, his one man
show, won him a Laurence Olivier Award in 2000. He returned to
Neighbours on a short term basis in 2005, 14 years after his last
appearance
Anne Charleston (Madge Bishop) - A Neighbours legend, she spent
11 years on the soap. After leaving, she revived her career in the
UK, playing Betty Waddell in the relaunched series of Crossroads in
2003. She joined the cast of Emmerdale in 2006 as Lily Butterfield and
is also a regular performer in pantomime.
Peter O'Brien (Shane Ramsay) - Charlene's heart-throb of
a cousin was the swimming champion son of Max and Maria Ramsay.
Remember his great love Daphne (Elaine Smith) who left him for Des (Paul
Keane)? Peter O'Brien's post- Neighbours career has included TV roles
(Queer As Folk, The Bill, Casualty) and movies. He's pictured in The
Return alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Nicky Whelan (Pepper
Steiger)
looks to have achieved her dream of acting in Hollywood. The Sunday
Herald Sun reports that she's landed a role alongside old friend
David Spade in comedy Hollywood & Wine. In another, slightly
strange, Nicky rumour, actor Gary Stretch is claiming on
his IMDB page that he
married her earlier this year!
Maggie Millar (Rosie Hoyland)
will be visiting Dublin in June 2008. Maggie will be performing her
acclaimed reading of Molly Bloom, the famous last chapter of
James Joyce’s Ulysses, as part of the City’s Bloomsday Festival
celebrations, happening on Saturday 14th, Sunday 15th, and Monday 16th
June 2008.
And how many more will
be able to add over the next years to come?
