Promise Ring Chapter 7

Chapter 7

I woke up the next morning early. At 7. I tossed and turned on hours on end before getting out of bed. I knew Aaron and Angel would be awake, possibly Leslie. BJ's room was slightly ajar, so I slipped in quietly, careful not to wake them up. The two of them were sound asleep. Caitlin laid on her stomach with her arms outstretched in front of her. She looked so beautiful and peaceful, I decided not to wake her up and grab some breakfast, instead. I tiptoed out of the room and went downstairs to find my mom watching cartoons with Aaron and Angel.

"Nick, what are you doing up?" my mom asked me.

"Couldn't sleep," I mumbled. I poured myself some cereal when the phone rang.

"Hello?" my mom asked. She was silent for a moment and then covered the receiver with her hand.

"Go wake Caitlin, up. Her mom is on the phone." my mom ordered. I nodded and walked up the stairs and anticipated walking into BJ's room. I saw her sleeping figure and just stood there, watching her sleep like an angel. I nudged her elbow lightly causing her eyelids to flutter open.

"What do you want, Nick?" she mumbled when she saw me.

"Your mom is on the phone." I responded. She nodded and stretched before getting out of bed. We walked down the stairs in silence and I finished eating my cereal while she was on the phone.

"What'd she want?" I asked nosily when she hung up.

"The usual mother/daughter stuff," she replied.

Just then we heard footsteps on the stairs and we looked to see BJ, half-asleep.

"Morning, Beej," Caitlin said

"Yea...." BJ replied. We all sat together and talked about the day we has planned while we ate breakfast. Every once in a while I would peel over and look at Caitlin, who was sitting next to me. Occasionally, she would even bump her knee into mine.

I liked her a lot, but I didn't want to ruin the eight year friendship we shared together by asking her out. But, on the other hand, Caitlin was one of the most caring, sweet, and considerate people I knew. If there were anyone else in the world more caring then her, I haven't met them. After many minutes of thinking, I decided I should go for it.

I paced back and forth in my room with my heart beating like the sounds of drums in my ears. Caitlin was in the bathroom blow-drying her hair. She was alone, so I figured it was as good time as any to get it over with. I took a deep breath and knocked before entering.

"Hey, Nick." she said

"Hey."

"What's the matter? You look pale, Nick!" she told me. I knew she would tell me that. She knew me all too well. When we were in the first grade play together, I had gotten really nervous and had turned as white as a sheet. From then on, she knew that whenever I got pale, I was nervous. But as I stood there, in the bathroom, with Caitlin and her wet hair, I didn't understand why I was so nervous. I've known her for practically all my life.

"What is it, Nick?"

"Well, I...I...-" I stammered.

"C'mon, Nick. Spit it out."

"Well....IlikeyouandIwaswondering-" I said really fast and under my breath, but loud enough so she can hear.

"Go on..." she said.

"If you would like to go out with me," I said in a barely audible whisper. I looked up and saw her smile that 1 million dollar smile.

"I thought you would never ask," she told me with heart-felt honesty.
