Learning To Live

Chapter Two

Inside the Pooler, Georgia location of McDonalds, the tired night shift was working. Stephanie Bradl and Maryanne Marshall were cleaning tables, straightening chairs, and sweeping when Maryanne noticed the arrival of 4 big black buses. "Y'all better get cooking back there!" she shouted to Carly Andrews, Charles Carpenter, and Phillip Banks, who were working the kitchen that night. The manager had left an hour before because his 16-year-old daughter had gotten in a car accident and had just been taken to the hospital. Stephanie looked up in time to see the first bus parking and the last one pulling into the parking lot.

Maryanne commented "It would just be our luck 40 minutes before closing!"

"Don't you know it!" Stephanie moaned as they dashed to put away their cleaning stuff and get behind the counter before the flood began. Maryanne went back to explain what was happening to the kitchen crew, so Stephanie was the only one at the counter when AJ, Nick, Aaron, Brian, Kevin, and Howie walked in, quickly followed by the rest of their entourage. Her mouth dropped open when she saw who had just come in. She quickly recovered and yelled for Maryanne. Stephanie had composed herself and had a big smile on her face as the Backstreet Boys approached the counter.

"Welcome to McDonalds. May I take your order?" she asked.

"Hey, Bone, didja see that?" Nick asked AJ.

"Sure did. Did you see it Rok?" AJ asked Brian.

"Yep. You see it Kevin?" Brian asked Kevin.

"Yeah, I did. What 'bout you Aaron?" Kevin asked Aaron.

"See what?" he asked in confusion. The guys broke out laughing. "Oh, yeah. That. Sure, I saw it" he said, but Stephanie was the only one who heard him.

"See what?" she asked when they quieted down.

Suddenly, Stephanie heard a scream from behind her. She turned around to see Maryanne with her hand over her mouth and her eyes wide open. "Maryanne, are you okay?" Stephanie asked her.

"Oh...my...God..." was all she said. She continued to stare at the Backstreet Boys. Stephanie shook her head and turned back around.

"That's what we were talking about. You didn't do that" Nick said and pointed at Maryanne.

"Oh. I was starting to think I'd grown a monster zit or something and hadn't noticed it yet!" Stephanie said with a grin. "Now, are you gonna give me your orders or what? We need to get y'all served before we close in half in hour." Everyone started to give Stephanie their orders and Maryanne began to fill them. Within 15 minutes, all 30 something of the group were seated. Maryanne and Stephanie were out talking to their customers and getting them their refills. Stephanie had just started talking to the Boys when Maryanne noticed that another car had just pulled up. She went to drag Stephanie away from the Backstreet Boys so that they could get this last carful of customers. It was 10 minutes till 1 A.M.

Stephanie and Maryanne had just gotten back behind the counter when the door opened. Stephanie was the first to register the fact that these 4 people were dressed all in black, had on ski masks, and were carrying guns.
